The History of Melbourne

In Humanities for Year 9, we have been learning about the history of Melbourne with a focus on the colonisation of Australia and Indigenous treatment by the Europeans. We rotated between three classes each based on a different topic, Batman’s Treaty, The trial of the Myall Creek Massacre and Indigenous resistance fighters.

The Essay topics were;

Did Indigenous resistors have an impact on the British colonisation of Australia?

The Trial of the Myall Creek massacre was the first example of Indigenous people being protected under the Australian law.

Why is Batman’s Treaty significant to the history of Melbourne?

For each topic, we had to create an essay planner using the information we had gathered from each class. We were required to use evidence from different sources and use the Harvard Reference System in the Essays.

We spent three sessions on each topic and got to choose which one we would use for our essay and we had to write it in exam conditions. It was a great experience as we got to have a taste of what VCE would be like to help us prepare us for the future.

We would just like to thank all the humanities teachers for all their hard work and guidance to better our futures and prepare us for further years.
