South Asia Public Affairs Council’s Literary event

Seven students from Nossal High School attended the South Asian Public Affairs Council’s Literary event at Glen Waverley Community Centre on Saturday 30 March from 5 to 8 pm. This literary event aimed to bring people from various cultural backgrounds together and foster cultural understanding through poetry and literature.

Our students were invited by the Council as they felt that if we are to search for avenues to bring people of various cultural groups together to foster understanding and tolerance, then the participation of the younger generation was very important.

During the evening participants from a range of cultural backgrounds recited poems and stories that they had written through which they shared their personal experiences, hopes and aspirations.  Two of our students, Deetya Kannan and Rebecca Fernando, also recited their poems. Deetya’s poem “Wander away once again” dealt with effects of depression on our youth and Rebecca’s poem “Reducing Waste” highlighted climate change and its effects on our environment.

During the evening there were also cultural performances by children from various ethnic groups.  It is hoped that participation in this event did help our students to reflect, reinforce and construct the values we live by.
