Debating News

The Inaugural Womens' Debating Competition was held on Sunday 31 April, comprising an impressive number of passionate female debaters from a range of different schools all over Victoria. Taking place at Fintona Girls' School in Balwyn and hosted by DAV (Debaters Association Victoria), this event was a day of friendly arguing and a whole lot of improvisation.

Nalini, Deetya, Milni, Sankalpa, Prachi, Lola, Mila and I were presented with 3 secret topic debates; we were given an hour to prepare for each. All the topics were surrounding either feminism or simply begging us to question the fairness of society. The topics were: 'that women athletes should be paid the same as male athletes', 'that we regret the use of quotas in hiring employees' and that 'women should prioritise the election of female candidates above everything else'. These debates went forth in mixed teams of three allowing us to bond with girls that we had just met.

We all did rather well in terms of results but more importantly, this was an enjoyable day for us all. It was an amazing opportunity to broaden our contacts and meet like-minded people while exercising our passion for debating. A huge thank you to the school and in particular Mrs Page for funding such a fantastic opportunity. We would definitely recommend any interested female debaters to take part in it next year!
