News from our Classrooms

Foundation News

The Foundation students are confidently participating in all aspects of school at St Fidelis. Over the past two weeks they have begun Music and Physical Education lessons each Tuesday and they have started borrowing books from the Library each Thursday. They are showing their teachers how to be a Self Manager each day as they pack and unpack their bags and organize themselves for learning. Thank you to the parents who are encouraging  this very important independence.

Today is Day 11 as we count towards 100 Days of Prep. In Maths, the students are learning many counting songs and our focus this week is matching the numeral, word and collection for the numbers 1-10.

This Wednesday is the last day off for the Foundation students. As of Monday 25th February the students will be at school full time.

Sunday 3rd March is the foundation level Mass in the church at 11am. Please mark the date on your calendar and join your classmates at church and afterwards for morning tea in the Hall.

Year 1/2 News

What a wonderful start to the learning year.  The students have been very good at remembering our classroom rules and routines.  They are playing in the yards very nicely and including many children in their games.

In the classroom our Inquiry unit, “How can where we live affect how we live?” is well under way. The students are learning how other children in the world go to school.  They are locating different places and countries in Australia and the world.

In Literacy, the students are revisiting the routines of Read to Self and Read to Someone.

In Numeracy, they are focussing on representing numbers in different ways.

In Religion, the students are writing personal prayers for the classroom prayer table.

Thank you to all our Year 1/2 parents/carers who attended (or made contact) parent/teacher chats.  It was wonderful to meet you all and find out about your children.

Year 3/4 News

We have made a wonderful start to our learning this term in 3/4. Every student has arrived to each school day with a smile on their face and a positive attitude.

In Literacy, the students have been revisiting the qualities needed to be a good reader and writer and have discussed the expectations for when they are reading independently and to others. We have been unpacking what author’s purpose means and identifying why the author has written a particular text and who their intended audience might be.

Alex Patterson: The author’s purpose is to either persuade, inform or entertain you. An easy way to remember is ‘Easy as PIE!’. 3/4LM

Frank Gallagher: A good writer uses the Seven Steps to Writing and always edits their work. A good reader thinks of comprehension questions during their reading to help them understand the text.  3/4BF

In Mathematics, the students have been expanding on their number knowledge by examining numbers and identifying the place and value of particular digits using the place value houses. The students have been rounding 4, 5 and even 6 digit numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 using an opened numberline. The Year 3/4 teachers are very impressed and proud of their little mathematicians.

Thomas Vernal: When we round numbers we need to find the start and end point, put the midpoint in the middle, locate our number on the numberline and round up or down. 3/4LM

In Inquiry, the students have entered into the ‘Tuning In’ stage of our Inquiry Cycle. We have been investigating the ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’ and the students are exploring how our habits have caused this problem. The students are outraged and in shock about how their habits have impacted our environment and they are enthusiastic about trying to make a difference.

Harry Price: It is surprising how much landfill has entered our oceans. We need to reduce, reuse and recycle our plastic! Let’s stop producing plastic! 3/4KD.

Last week we had our Parent Teacher Conversations and found it to be a wonderful opportunity to meet with families. Building positive connections between home and school can have a beneficial impact on our students and we are all keen to help make sure that school is a happy experience for everyone. If you have any questions or you just want to catch up, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Year 5/6 News

The 5/6's have been working hard so far this term.

We have been delving into our Inquiry topic, 'What do we do with all the stuff'and conducted a provocation with a pile of junk in the SLA and why the students thought it was there and how they felt about it.

We are now looking at various products such as a water bottle, lipstick and a mobile phone. The students are discussing, what they think the various products are made of, where they think the products have come from and what do we do with these products once we have finished with them.

The 5/6 students are attending an incursion this Wednesday the 20th about all of us being leaders, leadership and team work skills and collaboration. They need to wear their P.E. uniform for this day.

A reminder that next Wednesday the 27th is our excursion to CERES. Students need to bring a T-Shirt that they do not want anymore for one of the reusing activities.

We are looking forward to these excellent learning activities this term.
