Year 6 Report

Term 2

Hooray to another great Term here in Grade 6! Well done to all students during Friday Sports for either competing in the Winter Gala day or competing in our very own 5/6 Sports Tournament. All students displayed great team work skills and resilience as they further developed these skills. The students have worked incredibly hard once again to produce some awesome work, read below to find out what we have achieved!

Literacy

In Literacy this term, Grade 6's read and wrote a variety of short stories. Our author study focused on short stories written by Paul Jennings and Michael Morpurgo. We read a handful of their stories, unpacking the ways the authors describe the setting, develop their characters and plot, and end their stories in different ways. We used these two authors as inspiration to write our own short stories. The Grade 6 students published their own short stories as they followed the writing cycle to draft, edit, revise and publish their pieces. This Term, all students participated in Literature Circles where they had the opportunity to meet with their group, share their thoughts, opinion and wonderings about the story and the writer's craft.

Numeracy

This Term, students explored Measurement in our everyday lives. Our Measurement unit developed knowledge on angles, perimeter, area, capacity and volume of shapes and objects.  Students completed a variety of open ended tasks where groups were able to solve real world measurement problems. The use of Minecraft Education and Manga High also helped to further develop our skills.  The Grade 6's also conducted chance experiments to determine the probability of different outcomes. We solved open ended problems, graphed our results and used our number knowledge to convert our outcomes into fractions, decimals and percentages.

Inquiry

Inquiry this term saw the Grade 6 students develop their knowledge of Australia's History from Federation (1901) to now. Students developed open questions on their topic of choice. The students then used their research and note taking skills to find the answers to their questions. Once this was complete, the Grade 6's presented their findings in a variety of engaging ways, by creating the trenches on Minecraft, creating PowerPoints and Sways and presenting their research through posters. Grade 6's also completed their Being Healthy, Safe and Active (Puberty) lessons this term.
