NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week at MPS
This year, NAIDOC Week (3 -10 July) will fall over the school holidays. This is an important week at our school, so we have started our learning early and will continue when we get back to school in Term 3.
NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The 2022 theme – Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! – encourages all of us to champion institutional, structural, collaborative, and cooperative reforms, while celebrating those who have already driven and led change in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities over generations.
Ryhia Dank, a young Gudanji/Wakaja artist from the Northern Territory is the winner of the prestigious National NAIDOC poster competition for 2022 with her entry, Stronger.
“I created this piece after reading this year’s National NAIDOC Week theme – Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! I knew straight away I wanted to do a graphic piece centred around our flags with text highlighting what we have been through and are still fighting for” said Ryhia. “I feel that this piece being black and white allows us to focus on the details and messages in the artwork”
Meet Ryhia and learn more about her artwork by watching the video below or clicking HERE.
At Monty, we have been exploring the NAIDOC Week website, reading books by Indigenous authors (as well as watching videos of some of our favourite people read books), learning the true history of our local area, getting our facts from authentic sources and learning about inspirational Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Keep an eye out in coming weeks for some of our work.
