Who is the greatest of all time? Michael Jordan or Lebron James. Serena Williams or her sister Venus. Joe Frazier or Muhammad Ali. Throughout time, and especially in sport, people have debated who is the greatest. Next weekend is the AFL Grand Final when a new team will be crowned the greatest of 2024.
One day Jesus’ disciples were arguing about which one of them was the greatest. Which one of them was most experienced, educated, powerful or understood Jesus the best? Who was the ideal candidate to take over from Jesus if the worst should happen? Jesus knew about their argument and was not very impressed by it.
He said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all” (Mark 9:35). Then he showed them a child and told them that welcoming, encouraging and showing kindness towards children is one of the ‘greatest’ works a person can do. Jesus was turning their worldview upside down. He was presenting a different view of what it means to be great.
According to Jesus, servants, children, small and vulnerable people are great, people who help others, practice humility and patience, and do unseen acts of kindness, are great. Our teachers and staff who work hard to nurture our children are great. And the greatest of all? Well, that mantle is reserved for Jesus himself, the greatest servant and Saviour the world has ever known.
