SSV Senior Girls State Basketball Championships

On Thursday 19th September BHS took our Senior Girls Basketball team to the SSV Senior Girls Basketball Championships at the State Basketball Centre in Wantirna South. This is the first time a BHS side has made an SSV State Basketball final since 2017! This championship brings together the 8 best SSV teams to decide the SSV State Champion.

The BHS team played the first match of the game resulting in the team needing to leave Ballarat at 6:00am! BHS were drawn into Pool A alongside Berwick Secondary College, Marist College Bendigo and SEDA College Parkville. Box Hill Senior Secondary College, Mansfield Secondary College, Bass Coast College and Western Heights College made up Pool B.

The first match against SEDA College was full of controversy when an opposition player went down and the clock for the match wasn’t stopped or reset, it lead to a 26pts to 38pts loss. In the second match against Berwick Secondary College the team got off to double digit lead only to let it slip in the second half and go down by 4pts (28pts to 32pts). In the last match against Marist College Bendigo it was a back and forth affair with neither team able to cement a decent lead. It was like that all the way to the finish when the game was declared a draw 41pts each. The team finished with 0-2-1 record and missed out on an opportunity in the Grand Final (Box Hill Secondary College declared the winner). It was certainly a day of missed opportunities for the team but coach Kristy Trahair-Merrett was happy with how the girls performed, especially without two of the teams tallest players (both injured). Kristy will be looking forward to taking the same team of girls to the National Basketball Championships later in the year.  The team had finished in 7th/8th place for the whole competition.

SSV Eureka Year 7 & 8 Boys Tennis

On Monday 14th October BHS took 4 teams (Year 7 Boys, Year 7 Girls, Year 8 Boys, Year 8 Girls) to the SSV Eureka Year 7 & 8 Tennis competition at the Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre. Several team withdrawals from the competition meant all teams had  one  match against Mount Clear College. The winners of matches would be declared the Eureka Champion and take a place in the SSV Greater Western Region competition. After a weeks worth of sunny days the competition was met with a rather gloomy day and of course a bit of wind to make play more difficult!

The Year 8 Boys team won their match convincingly 6 sets-36 games to 0 sets-16 games. The Year 7 Boys team also won their match only dropping one - set 5 sets-34 games to 1 sets-12 games. The Year 8 Girls team continued the run of the BHS wins also winning comfortably 6 sets-36 games to 0 sets-13 games. The Year 7 Girls team had a tough time going down 0 sets-10 games to 4 sets-24 games.
