We have kicked off Term Four with lots of new learning! Here's what we have been up to so far:
Reading: Our current focus text is Unreal! By Paul Jennings. Having focused on more serious texts over the past two terms, we are now shifting our focus to something a bit lighter. It will allow us to analyse a range of different techniques and the specific style the author uses to engage the reader.
So far we have explored characterisation, summarising, predictions, reflections, point of view and comparisons of texts.
Separate to this, we have also been exploring literary devices, building our understanding of metaphors, similes and personification, how they are used and what they represent.
Writing: Our focus in writing has been on Persuasives. We identified that with many disruptions towards the end of last term, we needed to revisit this writing style straight away so that we could focus on creating quality arguments and well structured persuasive writing pieces.
Maths: In Maths, we have been investigating angles (Geometric Reasoning) and Estimation and Rounding.
In Angles, we played a lot with Protractors, familiarising ourselves with how to use them effectively to measure and construct angles. We also built understanding of acute, obtuse, right, reflex and revolution angles.
In estimation and rounding, we have explored how to apply appropriate strategies to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1 000, 10 000 and 100 000.
We then applied this knowledge to real life scenarios such as spending money, calculating distances or populations and recognising how rounding to estimate makes this process easier.
Last Wednesday, the 5/6s had the amazing opportunity to visit the Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC). Students ‘travelled’ to Mars to complete scientific research while their peers collected data from Mission Control.
They also learned about electricity and built circuits to create a glowing light bulb and dancing robot!
We are very appreciative of VSSEC who made this program possible for us!
In Week Two, we held our Mini-Fete to conclude our fundraising efforts for Year 6 End of Year Activities. We had a fantastic day, with students showing excellent enthusiasm and responsibility to run their stalls! We were also blessed with fantastic weather (especially for those teachers who braved the Teacher Target!).
All up we managed to raise close to $875 on the day! A huge effort from our small school community! A big thank you to everyone who contributed!
