Introducing Mr Brodie                                 Head of Faculty - Performing Arts

At age 10, my interest in Trumpet was sparked by seeing Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong in the movie “High Society”. The instrument chose me with its big bold brassy sound combined with the evident sense of joy that Satchmo received after every phrase. I hassled my brother to get his friend who played Cornet in the school band to give me a lesson.

At first, I could not make a sound, but eventually with some persistence and more effort than I anticipated, I began to play my first notes. I too joined the school Brass Band and had many great years in performances, competitions, travelling to country Victoria and interstate.

I continued my musical journey to university at the Victorian College of the Arts where I studied to be a classical musician. As a freelance musician I performed on the roof of Flinders St station, the MCG, Hamer Hall and inside Government House to name a few.

I have been teaching instrumental music for 25 years across varied age groups and institutions. “Have fun and get things done”, is the mantra. Watching students grow, develop and have “Ah Hah!” moments is what drives me to teach. Listening to many different types of music keeps me revived and inspired as well as a keen interest in comedy and my obsession with radio control cars.

I am very grateful to be guiding the young musicians at Mullauna College.
