Introducing Kim Watson, Head of Senior School teaching English, History and Drama

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

I wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember but was inspired to pursue the methods of English, History and Drama because of the amazing teachers that I had in these subjects at High School.

How long have you been in the teaching game?

Since last century! 😊

What was your last place of employment - school/university or another organisation?

Last year I was at Healesville High School and before that, I spent 16 years working at Ringwood Secondary College.

What do you love most about teaching?

Teaching is more of a passion than a job and I never find myself wishing the day away so that I can go home. I really love helping students achieve and I like that every day presents a new and interesting challenge…and I love the holidays!

What has been one of your best teaching moments?

About ten years ago one of my previous Drama students reached out to me on Messenger and sent me the most beautiful message about the instrumental part that I had played in his life. He told me that he still used the artistic and life lessons that I had taught him, and I realised just how blessed we are as teachers to be in the position that we are.

What would be 3 things that you would like your students to know about you?

  1.  I am approachable and always happy to help them in any way that I can.
  2.  I may have been doing this for a long time but like them I still consider myself to  be a learner.
  3.  I am a Mum to two gorgeous kids and two super cute dogs.

Where is your favourite holiday destination?

Italy!

What TV show/series did you last binge watch?

Morning Wars.

If you could wear Harry’s invisibility cloak for one day, where would you go and what would you do? That’s Harry Potter’s cloak not Harry Ruff’s cloak 😊

This one had me stumped but ChatGPT suggested I say: “Wearing Harry's invisibility cloak would be a chance to explore the world with freedom and wonder, embracing the magic of unseen possibilities” so I’ll go with that.

What is the one piece of ‘advice’ or the one thing that you always say to your students?

It’s ok to make mistakes, so long as you learn from them.

Thank you, and welcome to Mullauna College, Kim!
