Harrison Kolevich is an experienced drum teacher with a degree in Music Performance. He enjoys working with young people and finding creative ways to ensure learning is fun, engaging and accessible for each individual student.
Outside of sharing his passion for drums with students, Harrison plays in local bands and stays connected with the Melbourne music scene by playing at shows and for community events.
He is formally trained in marching and jazz styles and has drawn from his personal and professional training to inform his teaching method. He hopes to instill a love of learning and playing percussion to everyone he has the pleasure to work with.
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
After working nearly 10 years in the construction industry, trying many different trades, none felt as grounding as teaching does for me. The rewarding nature of helping and supporting others is something that I didn’t get in construction.
How long have you been in the teaching game?
I have taught privately since 2014. Teaching in schools, mostly primary, since 2020.
What was your last place of employment - school/university or another organisation?
I currently work at two other schools and also a private academy. Great Ryrie Primary, Monbulk College and Stormer Music, Kilsyth.
What do you love most about teaching?
Sharing the beauty of music and making lessons as fun an joyful as possible. I’ve found that helping others achieve their musical and creative goals is something that's not only nostalgic but very validating for myself.
What has been one of your best teaching moments?
Seeing the confidence of my students grow in not only their musical ability but also in life. When students come to me and say “I can play this now!”, - seeing the excitement and happiness it brings is the best part.
What would be 3 things that you would like your students to
know about you?
Where is your favourite holiday destination?
Japan has been my favourite so far. Castles, culture and food!
What TV show/series did you last binge watch?
Scrubs.
If you could wear Harry’s invisibility cloak for one day, where would you go and what would you do? That’s Harry Potter’s cloak not Harry Ruff’s cloak 😊
Sneak into shows and watch bands for free and be a fly on the wall backstage. Or maybe playing the drums in public, that would be a funny prank!
What is the one piece of ‘advice’ or the one thing that you always say to your students?
Patient, persistent, perseverance, produces permanent prosperity. It doesn’t matter how fast we progress, as long as we keep working on it!
Thank you, and welcome to Mullauna College, Mr Kolevich!
