ON THE MENU! Term 1 Food Technology

It has been such a great start to Food Technology 2024. The students have been creating mouth-watering dishes while developing and enhancing their kitchen skills and food knowledge.

Junior students have made some refreshing fruit salad, chocolate balls, quiche and some delicious nachos. Year 9s have indulged in a breakfast taco, chocolate chunk quinoa cookies, chicken strips, and sweet chilli mayo, spicy gnocchi and gluten-free chocolate brownies. Year 10s have made Mongolian beef, Cajun chicken pizza, hoisin chicken stir-fry, chicken Parma burgers and a Big Mac! VCE students have produced many dishes, including chicken and corn patties, filo apple and dried fruit fingers, potato and spinach quesadillas, okonomiyaki, shortbread cookies, chicken noodle salad and the very popular chicken shawarma! They have also experienced a tea tasting and blending session.

We are all looking forward to our tastebuds being tantalised by our passionate, creative and skilled Food Technology students and teachers. A special thank you to Kim and Cathy working tirelessly behind the scenes to make all of these recipes possible.

Year 9 Art

Despite the heat on the day, some of our Year 9 Art students ventured outside to try their hand at observational landscape drawing. Armed with sketchbooks, pencils, erasers and little handmade viewfinders, the students created sketches by looking around their environment and recreating the images that they framed through their viewfinders. All agreed that it was a lovely way to spend time together in the afternoon and learn about drawing and composition.

Senior Art

On 1st March, our senior students had the opportunity to visit the NGV Triennial. This consisted of viewing contemporary artworks produced by 120 artists, which are displayed amongst some of the great collections in the NGV. The artists were selected from many countries and were commissioned to create artworks for this exciting collection. The art forms that were part of this exhibition covered drawing, painting, print, animation digital, sculpture, design, installation, sound art, performance, fashion and First Nations.

These artworks were spread over four levels of the gallery, which meant our students needed to see as much as they could. Then, after lunch, our students had one of the education officers take them to specific artworks where they learned about how a curator works with multiple people such as an exhibition designer and conservationist to ensure that the public would be able to see the artworks without damaging them. Students have learnt that much thought and planning goes into setting up an exhibition and that there is much to consider before having the public view it.

Students’ reactions are always great to see, as many of them do not go to visit exhibitions, and this gave them an opportunity to see what is happening in the art world here in Australia and internationally.

One student came up to me and said, “Ms, I didn’t know that they have artists' artwork from my culture here.” This was priceless, as this student, like many, is now aware that many artists from around the world are expressing themselves in many ways.
