Urban Harvest
Urban Harvest – Intergenerational Garden Program
Year 11 and 12 Urban Harvest students have been working at Lalor Community Garden throughout Term One.
This intergenerational garden program sees our students engage with nature, actively participate in community volunteering, and develop new friendships with elderly gardeners.
VM and VPC students have been busy weeding and clearing summer beds and turning over the soil in preparation for the winter garden. Students have worked alongside Lalor Community Garden members, gaining experience and expertise from seasoned gardeners.
This program not only allows our students to roll up their sleeves and gain valuable life skills like growing fresh vegetables and herbs, but it also sees our students interact and work alongside elderly community members, who are overjoyed to have spritely students helping in the garden.
Generations can learn from each other by gardening, as intergenerational programs provide a welcoming environment to share cultural and life experiences, and community garden members like Rachel have enjoyed sharing stories of their youth and school days with our students.
Additionally, this program offers increased social opportunities for elderly members in our local community, many of whom are still bouncing back from social isolation and it provides our students with an opportunity to disconnect from their devices and enjoy the great outdoors.
Autum will be a busy time at Lalor Community Garden, as our students and community gardeners will begin sowing the first winter crop seedlings and securing netting and planting beneficial flowers to ensure our winter veggies survive the Great White Cabbage Moth invasion!
We will keep the school community informed of our efforts and we hope to report back with a bountiful winter crop.
