Level 1 & 2 Wonga Weekly

Week 7, Term 1

WEEK 7 LEARNING IN...

📚 LITERACY

This week in Reading we will continue to make connections to what we are reading to help us understand more deeply the concepts presented in the text. When we make connections to the text and between texts we also engage with our prior knowledge and experiences.

In Writing we will focus on letter writing. We will consider the  punctuation needed when writing letters, when asking questions, making statements and formally opening and closing a letter.

Phonics this week will focus on the sound 'short i', as in the vowel sound you hear when you say the word 'pig'. You can also hear this sound in the middle of words such as 'dip', 'flip' and 'think'. We will consider rhyming and word building, following cvc/ccvc/cvcc/cccvcc word patterns to help our thinking.

What you can do at home

Together with your child, write a letter to a family member that you haven't seen for a while, or a friend that doesn't live close by. Before writing, discuss the things that you might like to tell them. The conversations that we have before we write help us to build ideas and think clearly about the message that we want to present..

🎲 NUMERACY

We will continue our focus on place value. Place value refers to the value of each digit in a number. In other words, the position of a digit in a number determines its value. We will be looking at the digits that make up numbers, including two digit and three digit numbers, for example the first digit in the number 16 refers to one ten, the second digit refers to six ones, making the number sixteen.

What you can do at home

Revisit the 'teen' numbers with your child. Ask them to record these numbers on paper and then have a chat about what each digit means. Building an understanding of the ten and the ones in our teen numbers is a foundational skill in Mathematics.

💒 CBL - Community

We are currently considering the following question,

'What are the features in our Wonga Park community that you connect to?'.

After exploring the local features of the Wonga Park community on maps, students will consider which part of our community they connect to and write a letter to this group sharing what they love about it.

🧒🏻 WELLBEING

This week during our 'Friendology' session, we will focus on making friends. This session will teach students strategies for making new friends, including how to introduce themselves and ask a friend to play.

🌟 REMINDERS

Last week we completed our iPad protocols process and your child can now bring their fully charged iPad to school every day. To help ensure your child's iPad is ready to use at school, please log on to Sentral (on a laptop or desktop computer) to complete the Mosyle Device Management (MDM) permission. This will ensure your child has access to wifi at school.

Our 'Level 1 & 2 Information Session' is now available for you to view. We hope you find the recording informative. Please do not hesitate to communicate with your child's classroom teacher if you have any further questions.

Please ensure your child brings their 'Take Home Book Pocket' to school every day. Help your child by reminding them to pack it in their school bag as soon as they have finished reading at home. This will help with setting a good daily habit, making things easier in the long run!
