Prep Wonga Weekly

Week 7, Term 1

INFORMATION

🗓️ Upcoming Dates:

Wednesday 27th March: Colour Run!

Thursday 28th March: Last day of Term 1

Golden 10 Minutes - 8.50 - 9am9am

💛 The 'Golden 10' is a valuable time to quickly touch base with your child's teacher to let us know if there have been any issues with your child overnight that may impact their day.

💛 If you require more time than a quick handover, we ask that you make a time to meet with us after school, where we can give you our attention without interruptions and the busyness of the morning.

💛 Term 2 is a busy term of learning and we will be starting Reading Groups at 9am. We kindly ask that parents refrain from entering the classroom now, and that you allow your  child's teacher to greet them at the door and assist them to independently prepare for the day. After a goodbye hug has occurred, we also ask for your understanding in moving away from classroom doors, as this removes temptation for your child to run after you.

📸Learning Snapshots:

Learning snapshots are sent home regularly throughout the year to celebrate your child's learning. Each term, there will be a literacy, maths and specialist snapshot. In term 1, these pieces of work will have a little explanation about the task attached to them. When iPads come to school, they will come home on iPads. Please celebrate your child's effort in the task.

Keep an eye out in the Wonga Weekly to see if a snapshot is coming home!

CURRICULUM

📚 Reading

The comprehension strategy we will learn about is 'Problem and Solution'. 'Problem' is what goes wrong in the story / what needs to be fixed? 'Solution' is how the problem is solved.

In Reading Groups this week, students will be participate in a Guided Reading group, as well as completing activities related to:

-Problem and solution

-CVC decoding

-Learning high frequency words

What can you do at home?

-Help your child read their take home book.

-Practise the Magic Words.

-Use the letters of 'SATPIN' and /c/, /h/, /k/ and /m/ to make CVC words and read them eg. map, can, cat, nip, pin, etc.

-Read to your child at bedtime. Ask them about character, setting, problem and solution in the story.

🔡 Phonics

Students will learn about the letters 'k' and 'm' and their sounds. They will learn the cued articulation and brainstorm words that begin with 'c' and 'h'.

Now they know the letters of 'SATPIN', as well as /c/, /h/, /k/ and /m/, students will decode CVC words and complete related activities.

What you can do at home?

-Ask your child to show you the cued articulation for 'k' and 'm' and the sounds they make.

-Discuss words that start with 'k' and 'm' , and the words that contain these sounds.

--Use the letters of 'SATPIN', /c/, /h/, /k/ and /m/ to make CVC words and read them eg. ham, pit, sip, sat, tap, pan, etc.

📝 Writing

Students will focus on handwriting, particularly focussing on 'up and over' letters like h, n and m. They will also write short, repetitive sentences, focussing on letter formation, sizing of letters and holding their pencil correctly.

What can you do at home?

-Help your child to write their name in 'school' writing - a capital letter followed by lower case letters.

-Help your child to develop their pencil grip / pinch. See the images below as a guide.

-If your child enjoys writing at home, encourage correct formation of letters (particularly focussing on 'entry and exit' points - where the letter starts and finishes)

🔢  Maths

Students will develop concepts of 'more' and 'less', counting forwards, counting backwards. There will be an informal introduction to 'counting on' (count from the largest group and add the smaller number).  Important maths tools like number lines and tens frames will introduced.

📸Learning Snapshot: Students will bring home a number line to show more and less.

What can you do at home?

-Continue to count collections with 1-1 counting.

-Use the learning snapshot to discuss concepts of 'more' and 'less' and 'bigger' and 'smaller'. Eg. "Can you show 1 more than 8 or on your number line? Can you show 1 less than 5 or on your number line?"

🌏 CBL - Community

We will continue to focus on our Prep community. This week, students will focus on the individual attitudes and behaviours that they can display, to contribute to a happy community.

Students will learn about Country and what an Acknowledgement of Country means. We will demonstrate our Acknowledgement of Country at the RAP assembly on Tuesday.

What can you do at home?

-Ask your child, "How can you help to make Prep A/B/C a happy place to be? What do you already do?"
