Year 5/6

Year 5/6 Cluster News
HOME INQUIRY:
Inquiry: With the election coming up on the weekend, include your child in the conversations about why you are voting the way you are. It is important for students to see that we value our democratic process and we vote based on what we believe is best for our country.
Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.
Mathematics: Working on general multiplication skills with the goal for automaticity of the facts up to x12
Harmony Day Monday 23rd March:
Students are encouraged to wear cultural dress or the colour orange
Camp: Camp will be held on Monday 30th March - Wednesday 1st April (Week 10) at Woodhouse Adventure Park.
Students were sent home with a packing list and consent form. Please return the consent form as soon as possible. The packing list can be kept somewhere safe to assist with camp preparations.
iPads: Please ensure your child has working headphones and a keyboard. The iPad keyboard will be important in the development of keyboard typing skills which will be part of their class learning. The headphones will be regularly used in class for a variety of purposes. Please check the connection of the headphones with the iPad as newer versions of iPads have a different connection point.
Uniform:
Please ensure your child is in correct school uniform, which includes correct formal shoes on Monday and Wednesday and no additional jewellery. Please refer to the Uniform Guidelines located on the school’s website. There have been students wearing incorrect uniform, including socks and shoes and it would be appreciated if these could be rectified. (https://www.goldengrove.sa.edu.au/school-life/uniform/ )
Year 6 Jackets:
Thank you for your patience as we work with a new supplier on our updated Year 6 jackets. We have now received a sample, and they are looking very sophisticated.
We understand that the wait is not ideal, but we have been talking with the students about the exciting fact that they will be the first Year 6 cohort to wear this new design.
We are getting closer to being able to provide you with a sizing chart and ordering information. Thank you again for your understanding and support.
In Writer’s Workshop, students have been publishing either a narrative or persuasive text of their choice, focusing on incorporating all of the writing techniques we have explored.
In Reader’s Workshop, students will analyse persuasive texts to identify techniques such as emotive language, rhetorical questions, modality, and the use of facts and examples, and consider how these influence an audience. They will apply these skills while researching issues related to our unit of inquiry into the Australian government.
Mathematics:
Students have begun learning about the area of different shapes using a range of appropriate strategies. They will begin by applying formulas to find the area of both regular and irregular shapes.
Inquiry: We have begun our new inquiry into ‘How we Organise Ourselves’ - Our central idea is: Systems can influence the behaviour of people and the way they live.
Students will explore how government systems work, the rights and responsibilities of citizens, and how democracy affects life in communities. Students will investigate how decisions are made, how people work together to achieve civic goals, and how individuals can contribute to their communities.
Blessings for the week ahead,
