The Humble King

"Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey." — Zechariah 9:9

Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, the prophet Zechariah painted a picture of a coming King — not riding a great warhorse, not carried in a golden chariot, but seated humbly on a donkey. When Jesus entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, He chose that exact moment to fulfil that ancient promise, and He sent His disciples ahead to find just the right animal to make it happen.

Think about that for a moment. Jesus could have entered the city any way He wished. He had already performed miracles, calmed storms, and raised the dead. Yet He chose a donkey — the ordinary working animal of ordinary people. That choice was no accident. It was a message.

In the ancient world, a king riding a horse meant war. A king riding a donkey meant peace. Jesus was announcing to everyone watching: I am not the kind of king you were expecting. His kingdom would not be built with swords or power, but with grace, humility, and love.

The disciples didn't fully understand what they were part of that day. They simply trusted, went where Jesus sent them, and brought back what He asked for. That small act of obedience became part of one of the most significant moments in history.

What does this mean for us?

It means that Jesus calls us to the same humble faithfulness. We may not always understand the full plan. We may be asked to do something that seems small or ordinary. But when we trust and obey, God can use even the simplest things — even a donkey — for His extraordinary purposes.

Jesus is still a king who meets people where they are. Not in palaces, not with pomp, but humbly, personally, and with peace to offer every one of us.

Dear Jesus, thank You that You are a King unlike any other — full of humility, gentleness, and grace. Thank You that You do not stand far off, but that You came close to us, entering our world in the most unexpected and beautiful ways.

Forgive us for the times we seek greatness for ourselves, when You have shown us that true greatness is found in serving others. Forgive us for the times we have waited for something big to do for You, while overlooking the small, faithful steps You are placing right in front of us.

Help us to trust You even when we don't understand the full picture. Like the disciples who simply went and did what You asked, give us willing and obedient hearts. Remind us that You can use ordinary people, in ordinary moments, to do extraordinary things for Your kingdom.

May we welcome You afresh today as our King — not just with our words, but with our lives. Reign over our hearts, our school, and everything we do.

In Your precious name we pray, Amen.

Blessings!
