Principal's message

Hello Alvie families,
It has been wonderful to see students continuing to settle into their learning routines across the school. Classrooms are focused and purposeful, and students are showing persistence as they practise new skills and build confidence in their learning.
Students in Years 3 and 5 have begun participating in NAPLAN this week. NAPLAN provides one snapshot of how students are progressing in key areas of writing, reading, conventions of language and numeracy. Our focus is always on supporting students to do their best while continuing to build strong learning skills every day in the classroom.
Last week our staff participated in professional learning focused on Mathematics teaching. A key idea from this learning was that mathematical understanding develops like a web, where different skills and concepts connect and strengthen each other over time. This was a great reminder of how important it is to build strong foundations and revisit learning regularly.
Teachers also explored effective ways to use manipulatives in Maths. Manipulatives are hands-on materials such as counters, blocks or number tools that help students see and understand mathematical ideas more clearly. These supports are particularly powerful when students are learning new concepts. Another important focus from the session was the development of fluency in Mathematics. Building fluency means helping students become confident and accurate with key skills through regular practice. Daily reviews are one way teachers support this, allowing students to revisit previous learning and strengthen their understanding over time.
Over the next week, we will begin reaching out to families to organise Student Support Group (SSG) meetings where required. These meetings provide an opportunity for families and teachers to work together to support student learning and wellbeing.
Parent Teacher Interviews will be held during the final two weeks of term. These meetings are a valuable opportunity to discuss your child’s learning progress and goals for the remainder of the year. Please keep an eye out for booking information and make sure to secure a time with your child’s teacher.
It has also been wonderful to see students demonstrating our school values respect, responsibilty and grit in their work, by perservering with their learning even when it is challenging. These positive learning behaviours contribute greatly to the supportive learning environment we are building together at Alvie.
