Grade 6

Welcome to Term 2!

On Monday, we began reading our new class novel Us Mob Walawurru by David Spillman and Lisa Wilyuka, a powerful and engaging text that shares stories from an Aboriginal perspective. The book follows a group of children as they navigate school life, friendships, and challenges, while also highlighting themes of identity, culture, and belonging. Reading the first few chapters this week has already provided a number of opportunities for us to explore some indigenous language and their English translations.

This term in Writing, students will be focusing on factual recounts. They will research and summarise key events surrounding the 1967 referendum, including what life was like in Australia before the referendum, the events leading up to it, and the changes that occurred afterwards. Through this unit, students will develop their skills in researching, organising information, and clearly communicating historical events.

In Numeracy, students have been developing their understanding of fractions through a range of hands-on and visual activities. They have been using fraction walls to compare the size of different fractions, as well as exploring fractions with shapes to deepen their understanding of part-whole relationships. Students have also been representing both related and unrelated fractions on number lines, helping them see how fractions are ordered and connected. In addition, they have been learning to identify and find equivalent fractions and simplify fractions, building confidence in recognising how fractions can be expressed in different but equal ways.

This week in Social and Emotional Learning, students explored the concept of self-respect through engaging podcast discussions and guided questions. They reflected on the importance of personal values and setting healthy boundaries in their relationships and everyday decisions. Students also listened to a second podcast focused on commitment, considering what it means to be reliable, follow through on responsibilities, and be valued by others. These discussions supported students in developing a deeper understanding of how their choices and behaviours contribute to positive relationships and a strong sense of self.

We are looking forward to an exciting term ahead, including opportunities to work with our buddies, attend a special excursion, and continue building strong academic skills. It’s shaping up to be a busy and rewarding term for our Grade 6 students.
