Grade 2

Literacy In phonics lessons, students have explored important spelling rules that help us to spell more detailed and tricky words. One of these rules is the ‘drop e’ rule. When we want to add the suffix ‘ing’, we must first ‘drop the e at the end of the base word.

To compliment this, students have been expanding their comprehension skills as they read new and exciting texts. A skill that we have focused on this term is making connections. Specifically, we have practiced making ‘text to self connections - where we link something that we have read, to something that we know, or has happened to us.

It has been wonderful to see students becoming more confident readers who are beginning to understand not just how to read, but what they are reading. As always, we encourage families to continue supporting reading at home by listening to your child read and discussing the story together.WritingThis week in Writing, our students have been learning about noun groups and how to use proper nouns in their sentences.  A noun group gives more information about a noun. Instead of just saying “the dog,” students learnt to expand their ideas by adding describing words, such as “the small brown dog” or “the fluffy, playful puppy.” This helps make their writing more detailed and interesting for the reader.

Students also explored proper nouns, which are special names for people, places, and things. We learnt that proper nouns always begin with a capital letter, such as “Sarah,” “Melbourne,” or “Monday.” Students practised including proper nouns in their sentences to make their writing more specific.

Maths

It has been a fantastic start to the term, with students enthusiastically engaging in our Maths learning. This week, students explored several important concepts to strengthen their understanding of number operations within 100. We began by learning how to use place value to add and subtract multiples of ten. Students practised recognising the value of tens in two-digit numbers and used this knowledge to efficiently solve problems.

We also focused on using number bonds to subtract multiples of ten. By building on their understanding of how numbers are connected, students developed flexible strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems mentally and with greater confidence. It has been wonderful to see students sharing their thinking, using mathematical language, and building confidence in their problem-solving skills.
