Grade 1

Reading:
This week, students have been developing their reading skills by exploring a range of important concepts. They have been learning to recognise long vowel sounds and identify words that include the vowel digraph /_y/. Students have also been recognising homophones and identifying them within sentences, building their understanding of how words can sound the same but have different meanings. By applying their learnt sound knowledge, they have been practising reading non-words, strengthening their decoding skills and confidence. Through these activities, students have been learning to recognise and use homophones correctly in both reading and writing.
Writing:
This week, students have been building their writing skills by focusing on creating simple sentences and developing them into complete “super sentences.” Through our mentor texts Ask Aunty: Seasons and Poetry and Aesop’s Fables, they have been exploring both informative and imaginative texts. Students have been learning to understand and respond to stories they read or listen to, sharing their ideas and making connections to the text. These activities have supported students in strengthening their sentence structure, creativity, and comprehension skills as they grow in confidence as writers.
Maths:
This week in mathematics, students have been developing their understanding of two-digit numbers through a variety of engaging activities. They have been learning to read and write two-digit numbers in both words and numerals, as well as identify and match numbers represented in different ways. Students have also been exploring how to partition two-digit numbers in different ways, helping them to break numbers into tens and ones. By applying this knowledge, they have been using partitioning to solve problems with increasing confidence and accuracy.
Integrated:
This week, students have been engaging in a range of integrated learning experiences. Students have been learning to compare their lives with those of their grandparents, developing an understanding of how life has changed over time. As part of Respectful Relationships, students participated in “The Anyone Who” game, where they explored similarities and differences between themselves and others. Students have also been reviewing library expectations, learning how to care for books and use the library space respectfully.
