Narrandera Shire Youth Council

Youth Events

Our Shire Youth Council Coordinator Nyoka Prior has worked hard to put together amazing opportunities for our students and the broader Narrandera Youth. Last week during Youth Week, several of our students were able to participate in various short courses to help them build their skills, confidence and future employment opportunities. Students participated in a variety of activities such as Basketball Lessons, Fishing with DRIRD workshops, Driving Lessons, Barista Course, Pizzeria Experience, Hairdressing, Responsible Service of Alcohol, Responsible Conduct of Gaming courses. These have all be amazing opportunities for our students to connect with their peers, explore areas of interest and gain new skills for life and future employment. An extension of these activities which are on in the next few weeks are the Skills Workshops under the ‘Where Do I Go From Here Project’:

A group of our female students are currently participating in a three-day workshop in welding. Organised and coordinated by Nyoka Prior our Youth Coordinator at Narrandera Shire Council, the workshop aims to encourage more females into traditionally male dominated trades in a safe and inclusive setting. Nyoka has worked with TAFE staff to provide this amazing opportunity for our female students to build confidence and skills in welding and metal fabrication industries.

Careers Pathway Interview & Uni Early Entry

Open for all Year 12 students.

We have commenced our Year 12 Careers Transition Interviews this term and I encourage all Year 12 students to book in for their careers planning interview with me. These comprehensive interviews take a minimum of two lessons and are tailored to each student to ensure they have a clear plan and information for their transition to post school life.

Students who are looking at university pathways are encouraged to organise their interview as soon as possible so they can have guidance on the various early entry processes offered by each university and how they can respond to the specific requirements of each university and course they aspire to study. If parents would like to attend these meetings, they are welcome to reach out to the careers office to book an appointment after school hours. All parents and guardians are sent a summary of the meetings with their child if they cannot attend in person.

University of Canberra UC4 Yourself Day

Wednesday 3rd June

This year our senior students can registered to attend the University of Canberra Campus Experience Day. This will be on 3rd June. Students will receive an email with the link to register for the chosen activity workshops and need to do this as soon as possible, so they do not miss out on activities. This will be a fantastic opportunity for senior students to see university life an learn more about the various courses UC has to offer. Any interested students should register via the link sent to their school emails and let me know they intend to go so I can organise the bus and logistics as soon as possible. This will be a one day excursion leaving early in the morning and arriving back at night time.

Western Riverina Careers Expo

Leeton High School

Next month our Year 10 group will head over to the Western Riverina Careers Expo at Leeton High School. This expo is an important opportunity for students to begin to gain important information for their upcoming subject selections for their senior studies.

Careers Expos allow students access to the many employers, tertiary providers, and organisations to explore careers opportunities, courses and discuss firsthand with industry experts all aspects of modern career and employment opportunities across the state and in our region.

I encourage all of year 10 to attend this event.

Safework White Card Construction Courses

Two Virtual Courses to be held on 18th & 19th June and 20th & 21st June

We have confirmed the dates for the next two virtual White Card Construction Safety courses this term for 18th & 19th June as well as the 20th & 21st June. Students from Year 9 upwards can undertake this training and must be over the age of 14years old.

We have a list of students on the wait list, so I will be confirming with each student if they are intending to attend this course due to the rules of SafeWork we can only host 15 students in each course.

The courses are completely subsidised by the Department of Education and so there is no cost for the course itself. However, the SafeWork Licence Card does have a cost of $30 for each student.

*All students will need to obtain a Unique Student Identifier Number to participate. I can assist students to obtain this online but will require them to bring in a photo of their Medicare card to obtain this USI. Or students can obtain this themselves by accessing the following website:
