AUTUMN IN THE GARDEN

Gardens are ever changing, responding to the weather and human touch in different ways leading to wonder but also disappointment. Prior to the holidays our two productive garden beds were planted out with a range of veggies.

Grade 1/2 are responsible for the junior garden and grade 3/4 for the Japanese garden. The junior garden is thriving while the Japanese garden is struggling- the sustainability committee is looking at the watering system there.

Last week the grade 1/2s checked on progress. Their enthusiasm was a delight to behold! Nothing fazed nor bored them. Weeding was done with care. Leaves were busily swept up and used as mulch around the raspberry canes. The beautifully autumn-coloured leaves were pruned from the strawberry bushes. A late season burst of beans created a fun treasure hunt amongst the vines and leaves and  spontaneous tasting by the students. We all marvelled at the lush growth of the lettuces which always do well back there.

It’s been a bit dry so we did some watering by hand and Leo had a hand in a little magic. “Look at the rainbow!” “Wow, how do you do that?” Leo explained: “You just need water and light.” Thanks Leo. Science and wonder- the garden has it all.

If there are any parents who would like to be involved with the garden and more broadly the school's sustainability committee we'd love to have you on board! Just let Perrine in the office know. It's a great way to be involved with the students in their learning and to make some new friends in the school community.
