Rowan Doyle

In The 'Classroom'

The curriculum focus' for each year level for this term will be:

Foundation - Students will participate in a variety of physical activities and games. Students will practice and perform the fundamental movement skills including running, hopping and balancing. They will continue to practice more complex skills such as over-arm and under-arm throw and be introduced to striking and bouncing balls.

Years 1 + 2 - Students will further develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to movement by participating in a variety of physical activities and games. Through active participation, students will investigate their body’s response to different types of physical activities. Students will continue to practice the fundamental movement skills, specifically the forehand strike, two hand strike, ball bounce and running and begin to apply these in game situations.

Years 3 + 4 - Students will perform specialised movement skills including forehand and backhand strike and underarm and overarm throw when participating in modified Net/Wall games. These games will include Newcombe Ball, Badminton, Table Tennis and Hot Shots Tennis. In Health, students will examine the benefits of physical activity and physical fitness to their health and wellbeing.

Years 5 + 6 - Students will propose and apply movement concepts and strategies when participating in modified Net/Wall games. These will include Table Tennis, Badminton, Hot Shots Tennis and Volleyball. While participating in these games, students will demonstrate ethical behaviour and fair play that aligns with the rules. Students will also participate in physical activities designed to enhance fitness, and discuss the impact of regular participation on health and wellbeing.

Cross Country

This term the major sporting event calendar includes the annual House Cross Country Carnival. This is a whole school event taking place on the oval (and surrounding street for the older students) and a great opportunity for our students to be able to support their house and classmates and getting active at the same time. The students will be running a range of distances starting at 500m for our Foundation students up to 3km for the 12/13 year old students. Please refer to the specific Compass News Feed for the full schedule of distances, event times and request for parent volunteers.

During our P.E sessions we have been using our warm up time for some brief Cross Country preparation however, if your child would like some extra structured practice please encourage them to come along to Run Club (details below).

Run Club - Term Two

What a great start to the Term Two Running Club we had during Week 1 with 30+ students attending. There was a great community vibe amongst the students from different year levels working together and the parents supporting.

For students who would like to build their skills and fitness ahead of the BRPS Cross Country Carnival (and District Cross Country event later in the term) Susanne Baker and Debbie Halas will continue to put the willing students through their paces on Wednesday mornings between 8am and 8:45am on the oval

*During weeks 4 + 5 there may be altered session times as the House and District Cross Country Carnivals fall on Wednesdays. Stay tuned for Compass updates.

A reminder that whilst the running club is predominantly aimed at the students in Years 4 - 6, younger students are welcome to attend. We are asking however that if your child in Foundation - Year 3 is going to attend that a parent also stays to supervise them in case the activity becomes a bit too much for them.

Victorian Interschool Snowsports 2024

The 2024 Interschool Snowsport Championships is being held at Mt Buller. The Cross Country event will be on Sunday 4th August 2024. The downhill ski and snowboard events will take place from Monday 19th August until Sunday 25th August 2024. The Primary School divisions are racing on the Monday through to the Wednesday (depending on age and event – see schedule).

Students compete under the school’s name, however involvement in the event is heavily parent-based. Each child entered will need to make their own way up and back down the mountain with their family, staying in their own organised accommodation and with their own ski equipment. There is a Black Rock Primary Snowsports Co-ordinator who will be there to assist on the mountain.

Entry in the event is encouraged for children who have skied before, with the emphasis on fun and participation. It is open to all ages from Foundation to Year 6.

The disciplines available for the downhill events are:

- Alpine Giant Slalom

- Ski Cross

- Moguls

- Snowboard Giant Slalom

- Snowboard Cross

Children can enter multiple events. Lift tickets are available at a discounted price for Competitors.

Please place your name and relevant details in the Expression of Interest form (Google Doc below) if you are interested in knowing more information about the 2024 Victorian Interschool Snowsport Championships. National Walk Safely To School Day

Friday 10th May

Now in its 25th year, National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual campaign and event which encourages all primary school children, their parents and carers, to walk safely and regularly to school.

It is important for children and young people to be active every day. Physical activity has many social, emotional, physical and mental health benefits. Walking to school is a great way to incorporate physical activity into a daily routine to support healthy development. Regular physical activity, especially walking, can improve self-esteem and confidence, help concentration and improve overall fitness.

Encouraging kids to be active each day establishes good habits that can stay with them throughout their lives.

BRPS is encouraging as many members of it's community to get involved in this event and walk to school on Friday the 10th of May. If you can’t walk all the way, combine a walk with public transport. If you must use the car, try leaving it a good distance from the school and walk the rest of the way. Why not teach children the vital road safety rules while walking to school and be mindful that state and national organisations advise that children under 10 always hold an adults hand when crossing the road.
