Assistant Principals' Report
Dear HPS Community,
EDUCATION WEEK
This year, Education Week runs from Monday 13th May to Friday 17th May. The theme, Spotlight on STEM, celebrates the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in our everyday lives, in the classroom and beyond.
Heidelberg Primary School will be celebrating Education Week by inviting parents, carers and friends into classrooms from 2:45 on Friday 17th May where you will find budding scientists, technicians, engineers and mathematicians showcasing their knowledge, skills and learning in all things STEM!
Ideas for STEM related home learning
You can help your child engage with STEM at home by encouraging them to investigate and ask questions about the real world. You can do this by asking open-ended questions, such as:
- Can you describe...?
- I wonder what would happen if...?
- How would you answer that question...?
- What if...?
For younger children:
- playing games to identify different shapes, numbers and patterns
- singing songs and nursery rhymes about numbers and playing with building blocks.
For older children:
- using a digital device to make a movie with special effects
- learning cooking skills
- encouraging the use of apps and computer games that are STEM-related.
STEM websites and places to visit
- Museums Victoria cares for the state's scientific and cultural collections. Museums Victoria includes Melbourne Museum and Scienceworks. These museums provide stimulating exhibits and activities to help families maximise their STEM experience.
- Zoos Victoria provides families with the opportunity to discover a range of wildlife and learn about conservation.
- Cosmos is a science magazine published in Australia. Its accompanying website has the latest science news, discoveries, developments and events.
Have a great weekend!
