Incursions

Grade 1 & 2

Grade 1 Craftpower Billy Cart incursion.

This week, the Grade Ones attended a fun filled incursion in the hub. The sound of hammering and the spinning of wheels replaced the chit-chat as the students demonstrated excellent listening and concentration skills in order to complete their Billy Carts. This incursion links in with our current unit of inquiry ‘How The World Works.’ In this unit the students will explore the different forces that come into play to make objects move. These include push, pull, magnetism, gravity and friction. In the coming weeks students will decorate and experiment with their carts. We will also incorporate mathematics concepts such as measurement with literacy and scientific vocabulary.

Grade 2 - Mad about Science Incursion

On Friday 10th of May, the Grade 2's had an incursion with a guy called Josh. In our incursion we learnt about materials and what happens when you put them together. It was fun and we got to see lots of cool stuff like experimenting and seeing flame throwers. We looked through a microscope at different materials and even someone’s hair! We sorted materials into minerals, plants and animals. We also had tubs full of different powders and we mixed water and vinegar on different sides. Some went fizzy, some turned into snow and some didn’t do anything. We learned about endothermic and exothermic reactions which are hot and cold reactions. Josh also got a cup full of hot water and he had a special wire that someone scrunched up. He dropped it into the water and it went back to how it started. It was a reversible reaction.

We tested a hypothesis about what would happen when we mixed things together. We mixed baking soda and vinegar in a Ziploc bag and then we shook it and it popped because of the air pressure.
