Yr 1/2 Term 2 Overview

Welcome back to Term 2! 

We hope that you’ve had an enjoyable and restful break and are ready for a big term of learning. Our initial Literacy and Numeracy testing is now complete. We have been busy analysing the data to inform our teaching so we can best cater for your child’s learning needs. 

We have also planned some other engaging and meaningful learning opportunities throughout the term that link to our RE and Inquiry units.

Religious Education

In Religious Education, we will examine scripture about the Resurrection and the events that followed, including Pentecost. Through these stories, the students will explore their relationship with God and how he helps us live a healthy life. 

The students will continue to explore their relationship with God by reflecting on ways they can belong to God’s family and what it means to be a member of a parish and school community. They will make links to healthy living by examining elements and purpose of various prayer forms and interpret the significance of family meals and gatherings in relation to the traditions of the Church. 

Inquiry

This term, our Inquiry unit called ‘Healthy Me, Healthy You, Healthy Us’ will focus on the curriculum area of Health and Physical Education. We will be focusing on Being healthy, safe and active, Communicating and interacting for health and wellbeing and Contributing to healthy and active communities. 

Students will explore what healthy living looks like and the impact these have on their lives. They will learn about different body parts and how the body reacts to various activities. 

They will investigate health messages and slogans and how they relate to health decisions and behaviours. Students will explore actions that contribute to making the classroom a healthy, safe and active place. At the conclusion of the unit, we will be holding a Health Expo where students will share ways that we can be a healthy and active school community. 

Mathematics

This term in Mathematics, we will continue to focus on:

  • Place Value
    • Reading & writing numerals
    • Identifying & matching numbers represented in different ways
    • Partitioning numbers
    • Applying place value knowledge to solve problems
  • Addition and Subtraction
    • Representing addition number stories using tens frames, number bonds, number lines and other concrete materials
    • Using the equals symbol to show equivalence 
  • Measurement - Length, mass and capacity
    • Ordering and comparing objects based on indirect/direct comparison of length, mass and capacity
    • Using appropriate uniform informal units of measurement
    • Solving problems using comparisons of length, mass and capacity

English

This term in English, we will continue to focus on:

Reading and Viewing

We will be reading and discussing the language and features of

  • Non-fiction/Factual texts 
  • Advertisements/ Health slogans 
  • Persuasive Texts
  • Procedures - Instructions for activities and games

Writing 

Students will learn about the structure and features of different text types including: 

  • Letters, cards and invitations 
  • Persuasive texts
  • Procedures 

They will plan, draft, edit and publish their own texts

 

Speaking and Listening

This term we will focus on:

  • Interaction skills such as turn taking and active listening behaviours
  • Contributing ideas and questions in turn within a group discussion
  • Language to provide reasons for likes, dislikes and preferences

Social & Emotional Learning

Students will continue to explore St John's School Wide Positive Behaviour Matrix, "Be Respectful, Be Safe, and Be Responsible. We will explore positive behaviours through stories, role plays and discussions and the children will model specific scenarios to demonstrate these positive behaviours.

Students will also participate in circle time where they will be given the opportunity to share their feelings and have teacher-led discussions to support their wellbeing. We will also have regular GEM time where the children can record their thoughts, feelings and gratitudes in a journal. 

STEMGrowing Well

This Term our STEM sessions will focus on Biology. The students will explore the basic needs of living things that must be met in order to survive. Like all animals, we share many needs with plants, such as air, water and appropriate food. 

Through hands-on activities the students explore the parts of plants, and how common flowering plants meet their needs for survival. We will follow procedures to plant and germinate seeds and investigate plant growth in different conditions. In learning about the basic needs of plants, we will compare these to what humans need to live and grow.

Digital Technology

This term in Digitech lessons the Year 1/2 classes will continue to learn technology skills required for classroom participation, such as: 

  • Logging onto the Chromebook, locating their drive and creating and editing Google Docs
  • Word Processing skills include typing, creating headings, experimenting with fonts and use of capital letters and simple punctuation. 
  • Logging in and playing on approved educational websites and games independently
  • Understanding the importance of cyber safety and protecting their personal information
  • Instructing robotic toys to perform a function such as following a given path or movement

Homework

Homework will continue with nightly reading and spelling practice. Mathletics tasks will also be assigned to match the Maths learning in class. New spelling words for Home Practice are given on Mondays. Spelling Homework is checked on Fridays. Please help your child to pack their book bag daily.

Classroom Helper Support

Thankyou to those who participated in the Classroom Helpers workshop with Ange last term. Please let us know when you are able to come in and help in the classroom. We would love to have your support!

Reminders

Bookbags with Readers required daily. New spelling words for Home Practice are given on Mondays. Spelling Homework is due on Fridays.
