English

Reading and Viewing

This term we will continue to work in the whole class, shared and small focus reading groups. The students will use a variety of texts and Fountas and Pinnell leveled texts to work on comprehension strategies about, within and beyond the text. They will be reading texts with a particular foci that navigates understanding of persuasive texts including basic debates and advertisements. There will also be a revision on procedures through games in relation to the  aspect of rules as an extension of our Inquiry unit.

 

This term students will focus on writing to persuade/inform. They will create persuasive texts with a focus on arguments and evidence in support of the literacy component of our Inquiry and well being units. For each text type we will look at the different structures and language features specific to the text type. 

 

Speaking and Listening

The students will be given opportunities to listen and contribute to conversations and discussions to share information and ideas. They will be working on simple feedback of themselves and others  through a variety of opportunities. Students will be required to be  active listeners and respectful speakers when working in small groups.

 

In collaborative groups students will also plan and deliver short simple debates on given topics to build confidence, clarity and eye contact in their delivery. This will culminate in their Celebration of Learning as they deliver their learning achievements to other students,school and parent community.  

Mathematics 

This term we will be continuing to focus on addition and subtraction with the use of money. Students will be learning about change and rounding to the nearest five cents. They will continue to develop their understanding of efficient mental and written strategies. 

 

Multiplication and Division beginning with an emphasis on simple strategies to represent an understanding and the relationship between these 2 mathematical concepts. Students will investigate number sequences and the relationship between the place value of these digits.

 

In Fractions students will be reconginsing and representing simple fractions in different ways, including counting patterns and equivalence. 

 

In Decimals students will be learning about place value in tenths and hundredths.

Students will be creating, locating and interpreting  key landmarks, objects and grid references. They will learn key vocabulary to describe the position and pathways of specific locations. 

 

Students will be collecting, representing and interpreting data. They will experiment with digital tools to represent data displays. 

Inquiry 

Justice and Freedom, Honour and Dignity

We will start our unit exploring the history of past and present Olympics. Students will investigate a variety of sports in relation to our inquiry focus and other cross curricular links. The students will then explore rules and laws, and how they affect us. They will investigate the  differences between rules and laws. They will identify the different rules in different settings and laws that apply to all of us. They will investigate what would happen if we had no rules or laws and how some rules protect the rights of individuals. Students compare and explore the Australian law system and Indigenous Lore. They are introduced to the three levels of government, and learn more about the local government including laws and community groups. Students will identify who has the authority to make rules and laws and investigate and explain the cultural norms behind some rule making.
