Cyber Safety
Safer Internet Day- Tuesday 11th February
Safer Internet Day is a global initiative aimed at promoting safer and more responsible use of the internet, particularly among children and young people.
This year, the eSafety Commissioner in Australia is highlighting the campaign theme “Together for a better internet,” which encourages individuals to create a more positive and secure digital environment through three key ideas:
- Connect safely and with purpose
- Reflect before we act
- Protect with knowledge.
As educators, we play a crucial role in guiding students to navigate the online world with awareness and caution.
This year’s campaign exposes some alarming statistics highlighting the urgency of online safety education. For instance, 70% of Australian adults have experienced a negative online incident, and nearly a third of young gamers have faced bullying in the virtual world. Such data underscores the necessity for continuous education and awareness efforts.
CyberSafety @ COHR with Inform & Empower
Our students will once again be participating in Cyber Safety webinars each term with Marty from Inform & Empower. Our Preps will also be participating this year as Inform & Empower have added them back to their program.
All students in week 4 or 5 will join in live to listen, discuss and reflect on different topics to help them all continue to become positive digital citizens. As well as these termly webinars, students will also have lessons in their own classes, their Digital Technology and Library classes throughout the year. In Week 3 & 4, The Loft will have a Cyber safety focus which all classes will visit.
Here's an introductory letter from the Inform & Empower Team
Below is the focus for each level's session as well as 'tip sheets' for you to continue the conversation at home.
Prep - Screentime Superstars
Learning this term will focus on making clever screen time choices, such as identifying appropriate times and places to use an iPad. We will also discuss how to take care of devices and strategies for sharing devices with others.
1\2 - Ollie Online
Learning this term will focus on what the internet is, how listening to our body can help us recognise early warning signs, and how trusted adults can help us stay safe online.
3/4 - Adventures Online
Learning this term will focus on what the internet is and how it works. We will also explore the rights and responsibilities of digital citizens.
5/6 - Thrive Online
Learning this term will focus on rights and responsibilities as digital citizens, whilst considering that what we post is possibly public and permanent.
Whilst the live sessions happen in the classroom, it is essential that parents are continuing the conversations at home.
Inform & Empower have designed a simple "tip sheet" for parents/carers that gives an overview of the session and some conversation starters.
