Light, Wonder & Possibility In the Green Team
This fortnight, the Green Team children were invited to explore our light table with a carefully curated collection of loose parts including sewing cones, paper cups, coloured glass tubes and round mirrors. There was no right way to use the materials—just an invitation to wonder, create and discover.
Thinking Through Our Hands
Busy hands were hard at work as children stacked, balanced, nested, rotated and arranged the materials in countless ways. Tiny fingers carefully adjusted towers, experimented with different combinations and discovered how the objects changed when light passed through them. Every movement sparked a new idea, with children constantly revisiting, refining and rebuilding their creations.
As they explored, the children began sharing their emerging theories and discoveries.
"The light makes it blue."
"If I put another one here, it won't fall over."
"I can see two of them in the mirror!"
"The colours change when I turn it."
"Let's make it taller together."
These thoughtful observations show how young children naturally test ideas, notice patterns and solve problems through play. Their conversations reflected growing confidence as they predicted, experimented and worked alongside one another, discovering that every new idea could lead to another possibility.
Where Will the Inquiry Lead?
Open-ended materials encourage children to become thinkers, problem-solvers and creators. We wonder... What new ideas will emerge when familiar materials are revisited? What theories will the children develop next as they continue to investigate light, colour and construction through play?
