Humanities

Department Report

James Parish

Term 2 has seen Humanities settle into a productive rhythm, exploring a range of political and environmental issues facing the world.

At Year 7, students have been exploring Ancient Sumerian Society and the basis of human civilization. They will be contrasting this with the uniqueness of Ancient Australian Society to highlight its significance. At Year 8, after learning about the role of water in the world, our students are exploring the War on Terror, it's causes & impacts. Year 9s continue their discussion of the role of media in a democracy, with the opportunities and challenges created by AI, fake news, and social media. Lastly, Year 10 have been preparing for Work Experience, discussing rights & responsibilities in the workplace. A reminder, forms for Work Experience were due back in Week 4. Thank you to all those who have been prompt in organising this, its such a valuable opportunity. If you can please support those who still need some guidance and a nudge in the right direction that would be much appreciated.

Lastly, in VCE offerings have ramped up with a range of extra ways for our students to engage. Ms Patton has been working through the stages of a trial with her Year 12 Legal Studies class, calling on students and staff for their mock trial.

Also, huge shoutout to Mr Gilbert & Mr Olsen for coordinating our Humanities movie evenings. These are screenings that add depth & colour to the units we are studying in class. Last night, Year 11 Business Management watched The Founder to help understand entrepreneurship, business structures, and the role of competition. We will be opening these up to all VCE humanities students interested in watching.

Coming up, we have:

  • 26th of May - 3:30 - 5:00pm 12 Angry Men (Legal Studies)

  • 22nd of June - 3:30 - 5:15pm Death of Stalin (Year 11 History)
