English Department Report

Paul Kelly

As the term goes on, our English classes have mostly moved into text response units, grappling with big ideas and authorial intents.

In our Year 7 classes, after finishing the creation of their own myths, students have begun to read and respond to themes like environmentalism and legacy in Tim Winton's Blueback

Our Year 8's have begun diving into ideas like the burden of choice and the dangers and advantages of sameness as represented in Lois Lowry's The Giver

The Year 9 students have moved into reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, discussing ideas like loyalty and classism.

In Year 10 classes, students are reading and responding with both analysis and personal connections to the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.

In our Year 11 mainstream VCE classes, students have been working on their framework units, responding to the ideas present in dystopias.

In the Year 11 Language classes, students have begun discussing the ways in which children acquire a first language, and how adolescents and adults acquire additional languages.

In our Year 11 VCE VM Literacy classes, students have been preparing for Book Week with reviews and advertisements.

In the Year 12 mainstream VCE classes, students have been working on their SACs around their Connection to Country.

In our Year 12 Language classes, students have just completed a SAC on formality in Australia, and have moved forward to discussing the concepts of language variation with Australian society.

In our Year 12 VCE VM Literacy classes, students have been creating vlogs with their recent hike to Creswick.

As a final note, make sure you book in to talk to your child's teachers in our upcoming Parent - Teacher - Student Conversations. We look forward to seeing you!
