YEAR 5

FROM THE CLASSROOM

Our classrooms have been buzzing with curiosity this week.

In Inquiry, students continued researching inspiring Australians including Ash Barty, Steve Irwin and Adam Goodes, uncovering what makes each of them a standout figure. We looked closely at their early life, motivations and the lasting impact they have had on Australia. 

Maths lessons centred on mastering decimal place value, with students learning to compare and rename tenths, hundredths and thousandths. In Reading, we journeyed further into our class novel 'Once', exploring new vocabulary, 

identifying main ideas and analysing the characters we’ve 

come to know. It is hard to believe we are already halfway 

through the term!

Respect has been a major focus across our learning communities this week, with students actively looking for moments where their peers demonstrate kindness, cooperation and made positive choices. Each day, students have been giving tokens to classmates who show respect in the classroom and out in the yard, which is helping to build a culture where positive behaviour is noticed and celebrated. This practice has encouraged students to reflect on their own 

actions and recognise the impact respectful behaviour has on everyone’s learning.

WRITING

• We are learning to understand and recall our new Talk4Write text.
• We are learning to use appositives in our writing.

READING

• We are learning to explain the meaning of new words from ‘Once’ and use them in sentences.
• We are learning to build background knowledge to help us understand the next chapter of ‘Once’.
• We are learning to summarise the key events from chapter Ten and Eleven of ‘Once’.

INQUIRY

• We are learning how to use reliable sources on the internet to effectively search for information.
• We are learning to find key information about notable Australians.

WELLBEING

• We are learning to practice using positive self-talk.
• We are learning to be resilient.
