YEAR 1

FROM THE CLASSROOM
In Wellbeing we learnt about the different types of problems we may face daily; some of us used the ‘catastrophe scale’ to identify the severity of a problem and to support our understanding of how to face or resolve it. We also looked at a yard play scenario and shared our ideas on problem-solving or help-seeking strategies.
In Reading, we are continuing to build and strengthen our reading skills. We are exploring interesting vocabulary in our texts and learning how to find clues that help us identify the main idea. These strategies support students to develop a deeper understanding of what they read and help them confidently retell stories in their own words.
In Writing, we are concluding our Talk For Writing ‘narrative’ unit as we finish our independent writing piece inspired by our model text ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. In addition to this, we are engaging in ‘free write’ activities to expand our imagination and narrative writing skills such as including adjectives.
During Phonics, we continued to learn 7.2 sounds with: /-air/ (airy fairy fair) and its alternative graphemes /-ere/ and /-are/. We have been looking at these sounds through a variety of reading and writing tasks.
In Mathematics, we have been exploring the topic of ‘location’ using positional language such as left, right, forwards and backwards. To develop our understanding in this topic we have engaged in activities where we are following or instructing our peers and Bee-Bots using directions to move around a space.
In Inquiry we have been learning about the different types of environments (desert, rainforest, wetlands) that we may find in Australia by entering interactive and immersive spaces created by the teaching team. We learnt about the various plants which live in these environments and some of the adaptations that they need to have in order to survive.
