Senior Netball

Our first game was against Lalor, where we came away with a strong 22–3 win. There were some outstanding plays, including powerful drives into the circle from Maleah. Lucinda led the team brilliantly through the centre, while Audrey and Lola’s strong defence kept Lalor’s scoring low. Emma’s feeding into the circle was too strong for the opposition to keep up with.

In our second game against William Ruthven, we had a comprehensive 31–0 win. The team moved swiftly and confidently, while also trying out some new positions. Mary’s transition from basketball to netball was seamless, showing near-perfect shooting accuracy alongside Lily, whose leads in the goal circle looked effortless despite often being covered by two defenders.

Our third game against Thornbury was high intensity and high pressure from the first whistle. It was goal-for-goal for the first half, and you could cut the tension with a knife. The lockdown defence from both teams made it an amazing match to watch. Eve and Ruby’s defensive pressure was off the charts, and Eve continued to give 110% when she switched into Centre. Unfortunately, in the final five minutes, Thornbury broke away to win 8–4, but the Northcote spirit stayed strong.

In our final game against Reservoir, the girls decided it was time to have some fun and mix up their positions. Eve moved into shooting, Ruby became the tallest Centre of all time, Mary transitioned into defence like she had been playing there her whole life, and amazingly, the team still had great flow. Ede’s pressure in the wings showed her versatility, helping the team finish with another win, 15–13.

Division Athletics

We had an action packed Division Athletics carnival with 67 students attending to compete against other schools within our division in both Track and Field events.  Our students always have great day out competing and cheering on their team mates.  Many of our students came home with 1st, 2nd or 3rd ribbons. It was great to see Wolfgang Curry in his last year at NHS carrying on his tradition by coming first place in all 5 events that he competed in. Wolfgang is an outstanding athlete and a fantastic role model to younger students.

Those students who came first place, now advance through to the regional athletics which is on 9th September.  Well done to all who competed and for showing great team spirit.

Yr 7/8 Netball Selection Tournament

On June 1st we held our Yr 7/8 Netball Selection Tournament.  This tournament has become a popular event on our sporting calendar with 165 students participating.  We have so many students wanting to tryout for Netball we find this a fun way for students to tryout out for our school teams but also giving them the opportunity to play a full day tournament. The day could not run as successfully without the help of our older students who help umpire, coach and select on the day.  The teams have been selected for their upcoming Divisional Competition. We wish them all well.

Yr 9/10 Soccer

On what was a very cold and windy Tuesday the year 9/10 girls went to DISC to compete in the division soccer competition. In their first game they went up against East Preston Islamic College, and came out with a well-earned 3-0 win.

Their second game against the far more able side of Preston ended in a hard fought 1-1 draw, meaning that it was up to goal difference to determine which team would progress to the final. Unfortunately, after comfortably beating EPIC, Preston just made it through ahead of the girls.

Regardless, the team showed serious skill and passion throughout the day, dominating most of the possession against their opponents (despite multiple being hampered by injuries). All four of the goals that were scored were of quality, and the girls worked as a team in all the games, often playing in unfamiliar positions without complaint. Overall, it was an effort that deserved more success than it got.

On a freezing morning, the year 9/10 boys soccer team travelled to Darebin international sports centre to compete in division soccer. Our first game against East Preston Islamic College ended in a 5-1 win with a couple of great goals from Sonny Dryden.

Our second game saw a dominant win over William Ruthven with us scoring 8 goals and keeping a clean sheet.

Our third and last game of the pool was against Lalor, with us needing to win to advance to the final. After conceding the first goal, we came back to win 3-1 sending us into the final against our rivals Preston.

With only 10 minutes of rest between our last game and the final, we had a tough task ahead of us. Going into the game there was a huge crowd with standing room only. We conceded early putting us down 1-0 but with an equaliser from Raff Groves we tied the game 1-1 going into half time and the momentum was swinging our way.

We had 4 players go down with cramps throughout the game, but we didn’t give up. A tightly contested second half and a great performance from our defence left the score at 1-1 and the final was going to penalties.

After 4 penalties taken by both teams, we were down 4-3 and it was going to take something special for us to win. But luckily our keeper was Moksh Garg- the man of miracles, who went on to save 2 penalties in a row, requiring us to score our next penalty to go to regionals. Percy Windred-Wornes stepped up and slotted it home sending the crowd and us into a frenzy as we qualified for regionals.

Everyone played so well throughout the day, and I had a great time coaching the boys.

 Yr 9/10 Netball

On Wednesday the 10th of June our Year 9/10 girls' netball team smashed their way through our division competition at Nurrundjeri Stadium. The A team flew through their pool to the finals where they worked effortlessly together for the win against Preston. Shoutout to Maisie and Milena for their unreal shots in GA and GS and to Alice and Liv for their great defense down the other end of the court. The B team girls also had a great day winning all of their games and enjoying helping out some other schools who were short of players. Well done on a great day out, keen for regionals!

-Georgia McKay

Our intermediate boys/mixed teams also represented our school on the day. We had two very even teams take on the competition, showing very impressive skills in some tight matches all day. Our A’s just fell short against a very strong Preston team, with our defense keeping us in the match the whole way through. The B team had a lot of success on the day, ending undefeated due to some great teamwork and flashy plays. Well done to all the students who participated!

Yr 7/8 Girls Division AFL

Year 7/8 Girls Footy won the division round on Friday 5th June. Starting off with a big win against Preston (Northcote 7.11.53, Preston 0.0.0), while the second match versus Thornbury proved much more challenging and low scoring. With 1 minute to go and 3 points behind, Lillian Manning-Rendell managed to find space to snap a goal to put Northcote in front by 3 points and we held on (Northcote 2.3.15, Thornbury 2.0.12). Shoutout to great leadership and on-field performances throughout the day from Bea Murrell-Carey and Lola Whiley.

-Erin Gogerly

Yr 8 Boys/Mixed AFL

The Year 8 boys/mixed AFL team were off to C.T Barling Reserve on Friday 5th June. They started the day strong with 23-point win against Preston. After getting into their groove for the day they continued beating other schools comfortably making their way into the finals against Thornbury where they unfortunately came short of the victory. James McDermott, Levon Carroll and Emmett Courtney had a ripper time in the forward line kicking 11 goals between the 3 of them, alongside 7 other goal kickers for the day. Shoutout to our coaches Malachi and Hudson for helping get the boys to their final on the day.

Yr 8 Division Badminton

On Friday 5 June, the Year 8 Girls A and B Badminton Teams competed in their one-day tournament. Throughout the day, the girls proudly represented the school values both on and off the court. They competed with determination and enthusiasm, demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, supported their teammates, and assisted with scoring duties between matches.

There were many highlights across the day, particularly given that for some students it was their first experience playing competitive badminton. Both the A and B teams recorded several wins before being defeated by more experienced opponents in the finals. Despite the challenges they faced, the girls never gave up and consistently gave their best effort, which was wonderful to see.

A special congratulations goes to April Lock for her outstanding performances throughout the day. We also acknowledge Giselle Chouman and Maya Saling-Cohen for their determination and commitment, both in training and during competition.

- Marie Nguyen (Student Coach)

The Year 8 Boys A and B Badminton Teams had a wonderful day out, with both victories and losses. From excellent teamwork to wonderful sportsmanship, these boys demonstrated what it means to have fun while competing.

Despite many of them not having played badminton before, they showed persistence, effort, and skill throughout the tournament. They progressed all the way to the final before being defeated by a more experienced team.

A special shout out goes to Oscar Fretard-Zasempa, who went undefeated in all his matches.

Yr 8 Division Soccer

On Thursday the 11th of June a group of year 8 boys went to Narrandjeri stadium to play soccer, coached by Antony Joseph in year 11. Boys successfully won their first two games, scoring great goals and working really well as a team! The boys needed a win to get through to the final, but unfortunately lost their last game. They kept a great attitude and played well as a team right to the end. Hard loss, but hard work was had!! Well done boys!

On the 11th of June at DISC, the year 8 girls delivered an outstanding performance in soccer. The team began the day with strong win of 13 – 0 against Lalor, and 2-0 against Lalor North, then was followed by a draw 1 - 1 with Thornbury, which secured their spot in the grand final against Preston, although the final game was a loss we all had lots of fun and the girls tried their best.
