Developing a Whole-School Instructional Model

This week marks an exciting next step in our ongoing improvement journey at Leongatha Primary School. The School Improvement Team recently met with our Senior Education Instructional Leader to begin planning the development of a whole-school instructional model that will guide our teaching and learning approach over the next 12 months.

So, why are we doing this?

Quite simply, a clear and shared instructional model ensures consistency across every classroom. When teachers are aligned in how learning is designed and delivered, students experience greater clarity, stronger engagement and improved outcomes. It allows us to build a common language around teaching and learning, while still valuing the professional expertise of every staff member.

This work builds directly on the outstanding progress made by our Numeracy Team in 2025. The focused, collaborative approach taken in numeracy has led to strong growth and shared understanding across year levels. Developing a whole-school model allows us to take that same clarity and momentum and apply it more broadly.

It also strengthens our continued investment in Berry Street practices. Our commitment to Ready to Learn Plans, mutual respect and student engagement reflects our belief that wellbeing and learning are deeply connected. By aligning our instructional practices with our wellbeing approach, we ensure students are not only ready to learn, but supported to succeed.

Over the next 12 months, we will undertake a structured improvement process guided by the region. A key part of this will include Learning Walks and Instructional Rounds. These provide an opportunity to capture staff thinking, highlight effective classroom practice and identify areas where greater consistency will benefit students. Importantly, this work is about recognising the strong practice already in place and building on it.

Throughout the year, elements of the model will be piloted before full implementation. This ensures the approach is practical, refined and shaped by staff voice. Taking the time to trial and adjust means we can confidently embed a model that works for our school community.

This is an exciting opportunity to strengthen alignment across teaching and wellbeing, with a clear focus on improving learning outcomes for every student. We look forward to sharing further updates as the work progresses.
