Music Program

Performing Arts is off to a flying start this year, with a record number of music students now enrolled in instrumental music tuition. Places in some instruments are now very limited, so families interested in beginning lessons are encouraged to get in quickly. Ensemble rehearsals are underway as students prepare for a range of performances this term.

Our Stage Band (directed by Sue Cook) will perform at the Sunset Big Band event in Mordialloc this Saturday 21 February at approximately 3:30 pm. This free community event features a variety of student and community bands and promises to be a wonderful afternoon of music. Later in March, the Symphonic Band has been invited to share the stage with the Southern Area Concert Band and Bentleigh Secondary College. This is an exciting opportunity for our students to experience the world of community music beyond school.

The Year 7 Concert Band and String Orchestra will commence rehearsals following the Year 7 Camp, and we look forward to welcoming our newest musicians into the ensemble program. Don’t forget the autumn Twilight Concert on Tuesday March 31 where all the junior ensembles will be performing.

Taking care of musical instruments

In recent months, a number of instruments have been damaged due to rushing and a lack of awareness about how fragile they can be. Repairs and replacements are costly, so please take care when transporting and storing instruments. Do not place sheet music or folders inside the case, as cases are designed to fit snugly around the instrument; extra items can place pressure on keys or strings and cause damage. Never leave an instrument in a car, as heat can cause cracking or weaken metal springs. String instruments are especially delicate and should be handled with great care. When travelling by car, avoid placing instruments on back seats where door handles or shifting items may press against them.
