Year 11 and 12 Project Progress

As the school year gains momentum and we are halfway through the first term, our Design & Technology workshops are buzzing with creativity, and students are discovering that measuring twice really is faster than cutting twice. Both Year 11 and 12 students have been putting in a strong effort as they work through tasks and major projects.

Year 12 Major Projects

A big congratulations to the many Year 12 students who have hit the ground running with their major projects. Several have already sourced materials, planned their builds, and made an enthusiastic start on their projects.

We do, however, have a handful of students who are still deciding what to build or who are yet to begin. For anyone considering a large or complicated project, now is the time to get moving. The year tends to race by.

A gentle reminder that project permission slips need to be signed and returned as soon as possible. Materials and parts also need to be organised early to avoid delays (and to save students from the panic that occurs when they realise delivery times aren’t instant).

Parents and carers, we would appreciate it if you could check in with your students. A quick chat at home might help ensure they’re progressing as planned — or at least remind them that starting early is far less stressful than building at warp speed later.

Year 11 Project Work

Year 11 students have made an excellent start, settling into their subjects with enthusiasm and a steady stream of sawdust, metal filings, and new skills. Staff report that students are progressing well — and in some cases, even surprising themselves with what they can create.

Automotive

Automotive students have been tackling a range of practical skills, including:

  • Adjusting tappets

  • Servicing wheel bearings

  • Investigating cooling systems

This hands-on work is helping them understand how vehicles operate.

Engineering

Engineering students have begun completing their Toolbox project. They are now moving on to Folding Shovels, a project that requires precision on the lathe and patience.

Construction

Construction students are currently making toolbox/carry all, learning the finer points of using both hand and power tools. Many are close to finishing and will soon begin their step stools.

Furnishing

In the Furnishing area, students are working diligently on their small cabinets. Several are nearly complete, and once finished, students will move into the design phase of their major projects — a stage where imagination often runs wild, so this is a good opportunity for parents to be involved in the design.

We look forward to seeing the continued progress, creativity, and craftsmanship of our students throughout the year.
