Year 1/2

Year 1/2 Cluster News
Thank you for more family photos for the display in the class. Please continue to send or email them to us.
Take Home Folders need to be at school each day, particularly Mondays for changing Interest books and Thursdays for Library borrowing. We listen to reading throughout the week, so books are sent home as students are ready.
Please make sure your child can do up shoelaces themselves. Another option is shoes with Velcro until they learn this skill.
Please remind your child not to buy items for others from the canteen.
Home Inquiry
Who We Are: In class we will be using the Keeping Safe Child Protection Curriculum to talk about protective strategies. You could discuss these ideas with your child:
- Knowing your address, phone number/s of trusted adults and emergency 000.
- Problem solving: ‘What if…’ e.g. You are lost at the shops. What do you do? Who could help?
- What does your body feel like you feel unsafe e.g. dry throat, butterflies in your tummy, cold, shaky. These can be warning signs that something isn’t right with a person or situation and your body is letting you know that you need to talk to a trusted adult.
- Who is in your trusted network to go to when you need help? e.g. family, school staff, sports coach.
One helpful resource is My Body Safety Rules https://youtu.be/u03EHVf-7vI?si=WbAKddup6No7ytVp
Reading: every night for 10-15 minutes. At home, please listen to your child read the decodable books and ask the ‘check for understanding’ questions at the back. The interest books with coloured round stickers on the front may need to be read together or some children will need you to read all the text.

Learning for Week 4 and 5
Christian Studies;
We are inquiring into how Christians make decisions, which links to the current Unit of Inquiry: Who We Are. Students are reading and discussing stories from the bible where people made decisions e.g. The Good Samaritan, Jonah and the whale.
Grammar Focus
Year 1: capital letters, sentences
Year 2: alphabetical order, sentences
Writer’s Workshop: students are bookmaking with a focus on practicing the routines in order to develop writing stamina (writing for longer periods of time).
Readers Workshop: teachers are listening to students and conferencing with them to set and review goals. We talk about choosing a ‘good fit’ book is (students can read most of the words in the book independently).
Mathematics:
Year 1 and 2: partitioning numbers into part/part = whole e.g. 4 and 2 makes 6.
Year 1: time durations e.g. events that take minutes, hours, months, years
Year 2: using a calendar
Unit of Inquiry: How We Express Ourselves
Central idea ‘Ideas allow us to think, create and express ourselves’
Line of Inquiry 1: Ideas as a tool for learning
Line of Inquiry 2: Ways in which we discover and communicate ideas
Line of Inquiry 3: Inspiration leads to creativity.
We begin this new Unit of Inquiry by reading books about how people get ideas such as: The Magnificent Thing. What do you do with an idea? Luke’s way of looking, Ish, Dot, Aaron Slater, Illustrator.
Other Reminders
Bag Tags
It is useful for students to have a bag tag to identify their bag. Please only put one bag tag on and make sure it is not a special one that will be missed if it is lost as we are not able to monitor this.
Each day students need to bring the following. Please label everything.
hats – these will remain at school for the term. GGOSH have spare hats if needed.
Take Home Bags which are also for Library borrowing.
water bottles
a fruit snack
recess
lunch
Lunch Boxes
Please pack a substantial lunch rather than lots of recess snacks and put an ice pack in on hot days as the lunches remain in school bags outside. We also ask that you send in ‘nude food’ which does not include wrappers.
Take Home books
Children have begun to take home 2-3 interest books to read at home. A letter has been sent home explaining the process. During the week, we will listen to children and begin sending decodable books or other good fit books home to read.
Toddle
We post important information reminders, student learning, photos/videos and assessments on this platform. Please contact the office if you are not connected.
Volunteers
During the year we have excursions, a Year 1 Sleepover and a Year 2 Camp.
If you are interested in volunteering, there are a few things you must have up to date to be able to come along or to help in the classroom. Please do not volunteer unless you have these already. Contact the office if you have any questions.
- Working With Children Check (WWCC)
- Responding to Abuse, Harm and Neglect training (RRHAN-EC)
- Valuing Safe Communities (VSC) training
