Eucharistic Congress 2028

Gallery Image

In 2028, Sydney will become the spiritual heart of the Catholic world as it hosts the 54th International Eucharistic Congress, a global gathering that brings together tens of thousands of Catholics for prayer, faith formation, celebration, and renewal. This will be the first time since 1973 that Australia has hosted the Congress, and it marks the 100th anniversary of Sydney’s first congress in 1928.

What Is the Eucharistic Congress?

The International Eucharistic Congress is a worldwide celebration held every four years, drawing pilgrims to encounter Jesus Christ in the Eucharist through Masses, Eucharistic processions, catechesis, and cultural events. Archbishop Anthony Fisher has described it as a moment to deepen our understanding of Christ’s Real Presence and to renew joy, reverence, and outreach in our Christian life.

For families, it provides a unique opportunity to strengthen faith together, witness the global Church in action, and experience the richness of Catholic tradition.

Why 2028 Is Especially Significant

The 2028 Congress coincides with the centenary of Australia’s first International Eucharistic Congress, a milestone moment for the Church in Australia. Organisers have launched a multi‑year national pilgrimage called Eucharist28, offering prayer resources, catechesis, and family‑friendly activities to help prepare communities across the country. Parishes have already begun receiving Eucharist28 Starter Packs, including prayer cards and introductory materials.

The event is anticipated to be the largest Catholic gathering in Australia since World Youth Day 2008, with hundreds of thousands expected to participate.

In exciting news, Pope Leo XIV has indicated his intention to travel to Sydney in 2028 to preside over the Congress, marking a historic moment for Catholic families across Australia. If this visit is confirmed, the Pope would lead some of the major liturgies during the week‑long celebration.

How Parents Can Get Involved

As we begin this multi‑year journey of preparation, families are encouraged to:

  • Join their parish’s local Eucharist28 initiatives.
  • Participate in Holy Hours or times of Eucharistic Adoration.
  • Use the growing collection of podcasts, reflections, and family‑friendly resources available through the Eucharist28 website.

A Moment of Renewal for Our Children

The Eucharistic Congress invites our young people to encounter Christ in a deeper way through beauty, community, and joyful celebration. It’s an opportunity for them to witness the universal Church, experience living faith in action, and deepen their love for the Eucharist.

As 2028 approaches, may this journey draw our families closer to Christ, to one another, and to our mission as disciples in the world.

Stations of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross is a Lenten devotion that offers witness to Jesus’ Passion and Death. At each station, we use our senses and imagination to reflect prayerfully upon Jesus’ suffering, walking on a pilgrimage with Him through a series of visual reflections.

To follow Jesus as he makes the way to His death is disturbing; this is not a comfortable prayer. However, by remembering the Stations of the Cross, walking with Jesus and taking up our crosses as Jesus calls us to do, we become more willing to be patient, to love and to sacrifice. We become more like the people God created us to be when we remember Christ’s sacrifice.

Each grade (Years 3-6) will take part in praying the Stations of the Cross in the church. Additionally, K-2 students will have an opportunity to visit the Church and observe the Stations of the Cross.
