Middle Years

 - Mr Ben Hawthorne

Term Three started well in the Middle Years. The Year 7s are feeling more and more comfortable here at the Senior School. Our Year 8s are getting excited about their Mittagundi trip coming up this term, and the Year 9s are really looking forward to their Vietnam Experience at the end of Term Three.

Last week, the Year 9s attended the Southern Grampians Shire Careers Expo at the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre. This was a great opportunity for them to begin thinking about and exploring possible future career choices and speak to people working in different industries.

I enjoyed the discussions I had with our students (or overheard) regarding their areas of interest and possible careers. Many of the students had already thought about what it would be like to work in a given career and had taken the time to put themselves in the shoes of someone working in that field. Our Year 9s took the opportunity to speak with corrections officers, allied health practitioners (from Gen Health), drone operators (using them on farms), and exploring university courses at Deakin University. For some students, this may have been the beginning of thinking about careers, while for others, it was another opportunity to find information about a career of interest. I hope the Year 9s gained some insight into possible careers from the Expo, along with the free pens, jellybeans, hats and fidget spinners.
