From our School Leaders.......

Dear COHR Community,

It is a privilege to be writing to you all in this edition of our school newsletter as your 2024 School Captains. We have had a busy start to Term 3, filled with learning, fun and growth, and it will keep getting busier and more exciting as we progress. From athletic triumphs to creative performances and inspiring staff development, our school community has been bustling with activity. Here's a glimpse of the wonderful activities and events we've been involved in recently.

District Athletics

In the District Athletics, the COHR community gathered and performed admirably at the Duncan McKinnon Athletics Track. Many students competed and demonstrated their grit and determination, making us all proud. Quite a few students advanced to the next level, which is the division, in various athletic events such as high jump, shot put, discus, 4x100 relay, 800m, and the 100m sprint. A big thanks goes to Ms Tobin, our PE teacher, for organising and encouraging us to take part in the athletics. The division athletics will be held on Wednesday, October 9th, at the Bill Stewart Athletic Track in Burwood East.

Perform Education: "Maybe a Miracle" - Book Week Incursion

Last Tuesday, Perform Education presented a play that covered three of the shortlisted picture books for the upcoming Book Week. These included "Country Town" by Isolde Martyn and Robyn Ridgeway, "The Concrete Garden" by Bob Graham, and "Timeless" by Kelly Canby. The actors, Felicity and Harley, delivered a theatrical and musical performance titled "Maybe a Miracle." Overall, it was very entertaining and engaging for the students. We extend a huge thank you to Mrs. Wakeling for organising this event for us.

We'd like to remind everyone that Book Week is next Tuesday. Remember to come dressed as your favourite book character! Hot dog and doughnut day will also be held on this date, so remember to bring in your order forms soon.

Staff Day

On August 2nd, while the students had a relaxing day at home, the teachers were hard at work at the Foothills Conference Centre in Mooroolbark, with Mrs. Cowan leading the way. Mrs. Cowan guided the teachers through a series of learning activities designed to expand their knowledge, along with sharing some inspiring words of wisdom. The day included sessions on Christian meditation, staff and student spirituality and faithfulness, the benefits of mindfulness on students' mental health to foster a positive mindset about school, and the charism of our school community and our vision for COHR in the coming years, as well as improvements for the present. This staff day was very important for the teachers, leaving them exhausted but excited for the relaxing weekend ahead.

Science Week

Next week, from the 14th to the 18th, the students will be participating in Science Week! Feel free to have fun and experiment over the weekend to prepare for this exciting week. If the kids are eager to get their science goggles and lab coats on early, try out some interesting experiments on the Fun Science YouTube Channel. They have numerous experiments that can be performed at home. Some well-known experiments include baking soda volcanoes, growing crystals, and creating a simple circuit. We encourage you to explore and learn together.

Condolences to Mr. Martin

It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of Mr. Martin's father (Ray) last week. During this difficult time, please keep Mr. Martin and his family in your thoughts and prayers. We offer our heartfelt condolences and support to Mr. Martin and his loved ones. May they find comfort and strength in the memories they shared and in the love that surrounds them. The funeral will be held next Tuesday at St Louis de Montfort's Church is Aspendale.

With warmest regards for the fortnight ahead,

Matthew Middleton and Liesel Tambayah
