¡Hola! My name is Señorita Irene, I am from the city of Córdoba, Spain.

I have the wonderful privilege of sharing my love of all things Spanish with the students, teaching them language skills interlinked with cultural activities through our school’s Spanish program.

Prep

In Term 3, our Prep students will embark on an enriching journey through the Spanish language and culture.

Through engaging activities such as play-acting, illustrating, and movement, students will dive into the story of "La oruga hambrienta" (The Very Hungry Caterpillar), Spanish rhymes, and songs.

They will develop the ability to identify and name specific words in simple texts and will discover similarities and differences between English and Spanish language and culture through the lens of songs, stories, and rhymes.

We will also explore some words to describe the weather when doing our daily weather and date routine.

Grade 1/2

This term, our Grade 1 and 2 students will kick off their journey by singing and dancing to the popular Spanish song "Cabeza, Hombros, Rodillas y Pies" (Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes).

Students will delve into the Spanish language associated with Olympic Games, such as different sports, symbols, colours etc.

They will interact with peers as they describe their favorite things about the Olympic Games and they will discovered how English and Spanish languages borrow words from each other, such as golf or tennis.

Grade 3/4

This Term, our Grade 3 and 4 students will engage in interactions with Señorita Irene and peers, discussing favourite sports and countries participating in the Olympics.

They will explore the intricacies of the Olympic Games, from symbols to historical significance, gathering information to learn simple modelled text in Spanish.

At the end of term, students will undertake engaging tasks such as planning and executing a Spanish Olympic game, promoting teamwork and creativity.

They will also create displays adorned with Spanish chants, celebrating the vibrant culture surrounding the Olympics.

Grade 5/6

This term, our Grade 5 and 6 students are learning about "La ciudad" (The city).

They will learn to confidently ask and respond to questions such as "¿Hay un restaurante?" (Is there a restaurant?). They will practice giving instructions on locating places with phrases like "¿Dónde está...?" (Where is...?). They will also explore the use of pronouns and prepositions (e.g., "al lado de," "cerca de") to describe locations, and directional terms (e.g., "a la izquierda," "a la derecha") to give spatial references.

Furthermore, students will refine their pronunciation skills, mastering Spanish-specific sounds like "ci/ce/co/ca" and "gu/gi," along with intonation patterns that enhance their conversational fluency. And in writing, students will apply punctuation rules including question marks (¿Dónde?) and exclamation marks (¡Cuidado!), as well as correctly placing accents in words like "panadería" and "cafetería."
