From the Classroom

Grade 5/6

Last week, the grade 5/6s celebrated NAIDOC week through a range of different activities. We learnt about Dreamtime Stories, significant First Nations people and the meaning of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags.

                                                 Harry W  and Rachael J.

Our focus for the next PLC cycle is Punctuation. Students will identify areas in their own writing that they need to work on and set personal goals for improvement.

PT Interviews will run during weeks 4 and 5. Please select a day and time that suits you on the XUNO app.

On Tuesday, 6th August, we will travel to Tatura for a sports day. Games will commence at 11:30am and finish at 2:00pm. Students will play the sports; Netball, Soccer and Basketball in mixed teams. Tatura PS, Sacred Heart PS, and Murchison will be participating. If there are any parents/family members, who would like to participate by umpiring on the day, it would be very much appreciated. (A Working With Children’s Check would be required.) Soccer players can bring soccer boots (not compulsory) and shin guards (if available). Students are required to wear full school uniform and a packed lunch. There will be no Pie Warmer hot lunch for Grade 5/6 on this day. The cost of the bus is $5. Please see XUNO for information on this.

Science News

A new term brings a new strand of science, Earth and Space Sciences. In this topic, students explore the Earth’s dynamic structure and it’s place in the cosmos. Students view Earth as a part of a solar system, and explore how changes on Earth, such as day and night and the seasons, relate to the Earth’s rotation and its orbit around the sun. Students investigate the processes that result in change to Earth’s surface and the ways in which humans use resources from Earth. Students recognise the influence that human activity has on the surface of the Earth and its atmosphere. A simple breakdown of our learning is as follows:

Grade 1/2 – Weather in our world

Grade 3/4 – Day and Night

Grade 5/6 – Earth’s place in Space

As an introduction to our new units of work, we completed some whole class brainstorming using our brand new touch screen television. Students really enjoyed the interactive nature of the activity and were highly engaged in conversations and discussions. Please enjoy these photos of students hard at work.

We are doing some paper mâché in the art room in term 3. We would love any donations of old newspapers laying around to help us with our creations. All donations please send to the art room Tuesday-Friday. Much appreciated!
