Olympic Fever Grips Springvale Rise
Over the last couple of weeks, like the rest of the world, Springvale Rise has been gripped by the Olympics! Every four years this prestigious event provides a wonderful opportunity for students to not only learn about teamwork, perseverance, and global unity, but also to build their academic skills through a variety of exciting and engaging activities.
Our Junior Learning Centre (JLC) students have been delving into the inspiring world of Olympic athletes. During literacy sessions students used their iPads to research athletes, developing their reading skills by finding key details such as their date and country of birth. They then made notes about what they found and recorded these on an Athlete's Profile page which they shared with their peers. Our students were able to build their literacy skills while learning about dedication and achievement in sports.
In the Middle Learning Centre (MLC), teachers have integrated the Olympic focus into mathematics activities. Students have been studying sports such as the long jump and discus then competing in their own MLC versions of these events (e.g. space jump and bean bag throw) and learning important concepts related to measurement such as time and length. These activities not only make learning fun but also practical, as students learn to apply their mathematical skills in real-world scenarios.
Our Art classes have also embraced the Olympic theme by students creating the iconic Olympic rings using different materials. This creative project allows students to explore various artistic techniques while celebrating the unity and diversity represented by the Olympic Games.
A highlight of our week has been the Springvale Rise Mini Olympics! This phenomenal event was planned, organised and run by our Senior Learning Centre (SLC) students. With a focus on teamwork, resilience and fun the senior students worked together to plan every element of the event including, the opening ceremony, house flags and of course the fantastic sequence of fun activities which captured the essence of some key Olympic sports.
The whole of Heights Campus came together on the oval to take part in the event and represent their house. It was a fantastic activity, with parents joining us to cheer on the participants, making it a fun-filled day for everyone.
We are incredibly proud of the hard work and enthusiasm our students have shown in embracing the Olympic spirit. As we continue through Term Three, we look forward to more exciting learning opportunities and celebrating our students’ achievements.
