Pathways, Talents, and Leadership
Across the beginning of Term 3 our Years 8-11 students have been in discussions about what school will look like for them in 2025. To do this, these students were asked to consider the learning pathway they would like to take in senior secondary that will suit their gifts and talents and to prepare them for life after Bayside. This includes the elective subjects chosen in Years 9 and 10, whether they would like to commence a VCE subject early in Year 10, selecting the right balance and combination of VCE subjects in Year 11 or what VET course to complete at TAFE to name a few.
These decisions take time to discern and maturity to make wise choices. Now that this process has finished, we hope that these students come away from this experience with more clarity and excitement about what their next educational steps will look like.
Last Tuesday, we had our first whole school worship service for Term 3. The theme was Reconciliation and it was wonderful to hear the insights on this topic by our Human Resources Manager, Mr David Owens, who is also a pastor at a local church in Frankston. The primary worship band continues to grow in confidence as they lead our worship segment each service, whilst our secondary House Captains always run a great game that is inclusive of all age groups. Our next service together is Tuesday 27 August, commencing at 9:05 am in the Gym. As always, our parents and carers are most welcome to come along and participate in this community time together.
At the time of writing this article, our Years 9-11 student leaders are participating in the CEN (Christian Education National) Victoria Leadership Conference for senior secondary student leaders within Christian Schools. A point of difference is that the day is a student-led event, with content and guidance from the Global Leadership Summit (GLS): Next Generation Team in Australia.
Bayside was one of three schools chosen to help lead the day. It was amazing to watch Jasmine Hooper, Sarah Lough (Year 11), Joseph Gaskell and Gabby Cardona (Year 10) in action as they led the opening segment of the day with excitement, energy and personality. All students were asked to participate in a variety of group discussion and question and answer segments.
Topics included what leadership is, how to lead with humility, integrity, and with a servant heart, and how not to fall into the ‘comparison trap’ when we look at others around us, to name a few. They should be very proud of their combined efforts and know that they are fantastic leaders and ambassadors of the College. We look forward to seeing how they can put their learning into practice within the school community for the good of others.
God Bless,
Mr James Kumnick, Head of Secondary
2025 Year 12 Jackets
Orders Close Thursday 22 August 2024
It is our custom to permit students in Year 12 to wear a Bayside “Bomber” Jacket during non-formal occasions in their final year. Jackets can be purchased through the “Reform Clothing” website.
Each jacket is custom made so it is important to check the size guide prior to ordering (see Reform Clothing’s T&Cs on their website). Some sample sizes are available for you to try on. These are available in North Reception during recess and lunchtime until Friday 9 August.

GLS Next Gen Student Leaders Conference
The CEN conference held at Crossway Church for the student leaders was such an eye opening experience. The day was hosted by leaders from a few different schools including four from Bayside. With multiple incredible speakers both by video and in person we learned heaps including how to grow our confidence in many aspects of leadership, how to embrace the awkward, how to celebrate others more often and learnt that being a leader doesn’t have to be an allocated role.
It was refreshing to hear students from other schools speak about leadership as well so we could hear their point of view and ways they lead in their school environment. Something I’ve taken away from the conference too was that leadership can be seen in so many aspects. Leadership is taking initiative and responsibility in the things you do, setting an example for others and serving to help guide others.

For the past few weeks a team of student leaders from Bayside and two other schools under the CEN network had the privilege of running the first GLS (global leadership summit) in Melbourne. Through this experience we have been able to work together to make sure we could have the most impact on those attending the conference. On the day, we had some challenges which we needed to overcome which really tested our leadership. We would like to thank Sarah McCutcheon, who was our leadership coach the whole time, as we were able to take so much away from her. Overall the day ran smoothly and we were able to see the next generation make a move on their leadership journey.

Other highlights from the day:
- “I really enjoyed being among other Christian student leaders, it was a really valuable experience that was amazing to attend.” - Penny O’Brien
- “A highlight was seeing students run the event and one of the main points I took away from it was that a good leader leads like no one is watching and that leaders don’t need a badge they just need to be people that inspire and take initiative.” - Mitch Hooper
- “At the leadership conference, my highlight was how the session was run by students and how interactive they made each of the activities.” - Chloe Kidney
- “In the leadership summit I learnt so many things that helped me grow as a leader and as a Christian. The main thing that I learnt and took away from the leadership summit was that anyone can be a leader even if they don't have a badge.” - Isabella Lucas

3-Year-Old ELC Animal Feeding Extravaganza
Our Year 11 VM students walked the ELC students to the North Campus to visit and feed our animals. The students were able to interact with our baby goats, chickens, rabbits, ducks and geese and they had a marvellous time. A huge thank you goes to Alyssa, Sasha and Candy from the ELC team for helping to make this time so fantastic.
Pantry Plus and Winter Shelter
Our Year 11 & 12 VM students worked to support the Winter Shelter and pantry Plus programs at Peninsula City Church and they were a real blessing to both wonderful initiatives. Our students are learning the truth of loving their neighbour as they volunteer to help support disadvantaged people within their local communities.
Years 1/2 Father’s Day Workshop
The Year 11 Active Volunteering students have been working with Mrs Nadarajah’s Years 1/ 2 class. They are putting together craft projects for Father’s Day, and this will be a real blessing for the families of these students.
The Year 11’s were very apprehensive about this session but they thrived in this activity and worked really well with the younger students. A massive thank you goes to Madura for this brilliant idea and for explaining this concept so effectively with the VM students.

9/10 Indonesian Excursion to Consulate General of The Republic of Indonesia
As part of their studies in Indonesian, Year 9 and 10 students participated in attending the Consulate General of The Republic of Indonesia. The objective of our visit to the Indonesian Embassy is to participate in an educational excursion focused on experiencing and playing the traditional Indonesian musical ensemble, gamelan.
Orielle Anderson, Holly Baker, Maddie Bonici, Abbey Calder, Sienna Devenish, Dane Nolen, Zahra Pistone, Mackenzie Poynton, Jayda Ryall and Isabella Thomas participated this excursion. Joining this excursion promises an enriching academic experience, providing participants with unique insights into Indonesian heritage and musical traditions.
As part of our Indonesian Excursion, we had lunch at an Indonesian restaurant in Melbourne CBD. This experience was an integral part of our journey to learn about Indonesian culture and taste its cuisine.

SIS Lawn Bowls
On Tuesday 13 August all Year 11 & 12 VCE PE students got the opportunity to compete at SIS Lawn bowls. We took 3 teams in total, with 1 team of Year 12s and 2 teams of Year 11s, to the 14 team tournament.
After 6 matches, every team plays in a “final” to decide on their final position for the day. The “Bayside 1” team composed of Year 11s Sam McDonald, Kayden De Haan, Ollie De Haan, Adam Flemming and Tom Hughes finished highest with 5th overall and beating last year’s winners. One of their only losses of the day came as a result of one of their own players filling in for another school due to them not having enough players, and scoring the winning points.
It was a great show of integrity to play well for another school, highlighted by no other school filling in for this team in their subsequent matches. “Bayside 3” composed of Jas Hooper, Sarah Lough, Jason Johnstone, Liam Treacy, Skye and Lacey Jeremiah had a strong showing against Bayside 1 in the 5th match, before going on to end their day, winning their final 10-1 to finish 7th overall. “Bayside 2” was the Year 12 class of Maddie Gascard, Kyan Murphy, Ryan Pearce, Ryan Hooper, Riley Poyton and Amaris White who finished the day 11th, doesn’t not getting the same opportunity to practise as much as the Year 11s.
The highlight of the day for this team was Maddie, Ryan and Kyan (pictured) all putting a bowl incredibly close to the jack in the same frame.

SIS Badminton
For the first time Bayside entered teams in the SIS Badminton doubles tournament at the Somerville Recreation Centre on Tuesday 30 July. We sent a total of 11 players to compete in the “competitive” and “recreational” division.
Sam McDonald, Ollie De Haan, Nathan Brunetto, Joey Gaskell, Tom Hughes, Adam Flemming and substitute Mitch Hooper all competed in the competitive division, while Billy Ng, Will Unwin, Zoe McMaster and Izzie De Haan competed in the recreational division.
The standard was very high, with a number of rep level players including some Victorian champions for their respective age classes. Bayside competed well, winning a number of games with our highest finish being “Bayside 1” team of Sam McDonald and Ollie De Haan making it to the semi finals of the consolidation bracket finishing 19th out of 48 teams.
A highlight for the day was “Bayside 1” playing against “Bayside 3” (Adam Flemming and Tom Hughes) in the quarter final of the consolidation bracket, which was a great match up for the whole Bayside squad to watch.
