District Cross Country- Wednesday 7th May

On the 7th of May, we were lucky to send 20 students to the District Cross Country at Yarraville Gardens. Selected students from 3-6 raced against other students from schools in the Westgate District.

Congratulations to Jay in 5/6JP who came in 8th place and will be competing in the Division Cross Country event at the end of May.

We are so extremely proud of every student who tried their hardest, they did not give up and everyone passed the finish line with a smile on their face :)

St Augustine's is very proud of you!!

1/2RS love learning about 'Length'.

Year 1/2 have been learning about 'Length' in Mathematics, in particular ordering objects based on direct comparisons of length. Students have arranged themselves from shortest to tallest, measured their heights as well as investiagatheir shoe lengths to assess who is smallest, tallest and in the middle. Lots of interest has come from learning about who is the same height as one another, who wears the biggest shoes and who has the largest hand span. We have also investigated with pieces of string/wool to search for items that are longer, shorter or the same length, which has supported strengthening our mathematical vocabulary.

Grade 3/4 Museum Excursion

Our Grade 3/4 students had an exciting day at the Melbourne Museum, where they explored exhibits that brought science and history to life. In the '600 Million Years' exhibit, students marvelled at ancient fossils and towering dinosaur skeletons, gaining insights into prehistoric life. 'The Dynamic Earth' exhibit , we explored the solar system and the galaxies. There were plenty of squeals as they wandered through the Bug Section, discovering the creepy world of insects.

The adventure continued at IMAX, where students watched the amazing 3D documentary, 'The Story of Earth'. This film connected perfectly with our current inquiry topic on rock and land formations. Even after looking at plenty of creepy bugs and spiders it seemed the scariest part was the giant escalators at Parliment station!!!!

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden - Year 5/6

Year 5/6 are kindly caring for our school community this term in the kitchen garden program beginning with our annual Mother's Day breakfast.  Students carefully measured ingredients to prepare 200 apple spiced muffins, 200 Lemon Myrtle shortbread and 200 handmade seed packets, that were packaged and gifted or served to our families, particularly our mums at breakfast in honour of all they do for us every day.

This week we have prepared some creative art works using focaccia as our canvas. Students first made their focaccia dough, then while waiting for this to rise, teams selected from a range of ingredients and prepared their toppings to create their artwork. Though they looked amazing, they tasted even better. We will continue to care for our school community next week by preparing fruit skewers on Wellbeing day.

In addition to all the delicious menus we have been preparing, our garden now has a shed and potting bench. It has caused great excitement amoungst the students who are eager to enjoy the lovely Autumn sun and begin preparing garden beds for fruit trees we have planned.  The shed also means we can move all our equipment into one space and in garden classes students can now allocate themselves into teams to work in the garden area, maintaining our plants.

Year 6 Confirmation Workshop

The Year 6 Confirmation candidates attended the Mary MacKillop Heritage Centre to deepen their understanding of Confirmation and link it to the amazing life of St Mary MacKillop. Under the guidance of Sister Rita,  the students made personal connections to the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. We also had time to visit St Patrick's Cathedral where students said a special prayer for loved ones.

5/6 Police Cyber Safety Incursion

At the beginning of the week, the 5/6 students were lucky to have members of the police force attend and give a talk about cyber safety.

The main focuse was to be "share aware" and keep your settings online private. The students had an opportunity to look at different scenarios of videos, messages and other content online and discuss ways of making everyone safe. Realising that including videos of school uniforms, addresses, full names and even the year you are born can be easily traced.

We hope that all students are staying safe when it comes to being online and parents/guaridans are continuing to support and monitor
