Learning Community 2

23A - Mr. Rennie

23B - Ms. McAsey

Upcoming event!

We are excited to be planning an excursion this term! In Humanities we are looking at communities; how they are developed, the factors that impact where they establish and what we can do to be positive parts of our community. Later this term we will be heading to Old Gipps-town to see what it was like to be in a community throughout history. What has changed and how the communities that we are a part of have shifted over time. We will be seeing a historic school, shop, blacksmith and making our own butter! Keep your eyes peeled for the event and permission forms through compass over the next few days!

Reading

In Reading, we have been working on building our comprehension skills by exploring the author’s purpose—why an author writes a text. We’ve been learning to think about whether the author is trying to persuade, inform, or entertain us. This helps us understand the message of the story and think more deeply about what we read.

Writing

In Writing, we have been learning how to write persuasively—using strong reasons and confident language to share our opinions. Students have enjoyed trying to convince their classmates that their puppet is the best and that their mother or special person is truly one of a kind. We’ve been learning how to organise our ideas clearly, use persuasive sentence starters like “I believe” and “Everyone should”, and back up our opinions with thoughtful reasons. It’s been exciting to see students use their voices to persuade others in fun and creative ways!

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning about addition and subtraction by exploring fact families and using part-part-whole models. Students have been learning how numbers are connected and how knowing one fact can help solve another. For example, if they know 6 + 4 = 10, they can also work out that 10 – 6 = 4. We’ve used hands-on activities, number sentences, and visual models to build a strong understanding of how numbers can be broken apart and put back together. This has helped students build confidence in solving problems and recognising patterns in numbers.

Spelling

We’ve recently started sending home spelling words again. Each week, your child’s new spelling list will be added to their diary. The first lists went home last week, and we encourage regular practice at home to support spelling development.

If your child does not have a diary at school, their spelling list will be placed inside one of their take-home readers each Friday.

This week (Weeks 3 and 4), our focus is on the sound ‘ge’ and ‘air’.
