Education Week

Vermont Secondary College

Celebration of Cultures is the motto of this year’s Education Week in Victoria (May 19-23)

“In diversity there is beauty and there is strength”...

...the award-winning American author and civil rights activist Maya Angelou once said, and no doubt anyone who has observed our multicultural VSC community at study, work and play would concur.

At Vermont Secondary College, our diversity truly is our strength. So, just how ‘culturally diverse’ are we? Among the languages our Vermont Secondary College community speaks are: Spanish, Italian, Afrikaans, Hungarian, Russian, Serbian, Polish, Kurdish, Pashto, Dari, Persian, Arabic, Turkish, Uygur, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Indo-Aryan, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Konkani, Marathi, Nepali, Punjabi, Sinhalese, Urdu, Assamese, Burmese, Khmer, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Malay, Tagalog, Filipino, Mandarin, Cantonese, Wu, Min Nan, Japanese, Korean, German, French and English.

Our canteen menu has evolved to reflect our diverse tastes and appreciation of the culinary contributions of kitchens from all corners of the world. Our pies and doughnuts have been joined by not just Pizza, Burritos and Dim Sims but also treats like Singapore Noodles, Peri-peri Chicken, Tandoori Rolls and the African-Indian Kuku Paka.

Cultural diversity is what we experience and value every day at VSC. Learning with and from each other, our students grow into global citizens who see the world beyond their immediate surroundings. They approach others’ cultures with curiosity and enjoy the enriching experiences a multi-cultural school community offers. And so do staff! There will be a range of activities focused on the celebration of cultures this week and we encourage all staff and students to join in, but clearly, at VSC, the celebration of our many unique and beautiful cultures in not limited to one week per year.
